Team USA men’s basketball is back in action at the 2024 Olympics as they take on South Sudan in a Group C match on Wednesday afternoon.
There’s no question that Team USA, led by Lebron James, Steph Curry and others have this one circled in Paris after South Sudan nearly pulled off one of the biggest upsets in recent memory, losing by only a point, 101-100, to the United States on July 20 in an exhibition leading up to the Summer Games.
The United States narrowly avoided the defeat thanks to a go-ahead layup by James with eight seconds remaining. Team USA found themselves down as many as 16 points in this exhibition before rallying to avoid a shocking defeat.
In their first game of group play action, the United States took care of business with a commanding 110-84 victory over Denver Nuggets center and two-time MVP Nikola Jokic and Serbia last Saturday.
James and Kevin Durant were perfect from the field in the first half and combined for 44 points with the team shooting 56.3 percent (18-for-32) from beyond the arc.
South Sudan didn’t let their momentum of almost knocking off the United States slow them down, as they upset Puerto Rico, 90-79, in their Olympic debut this weekend with a strong second half in which they outscored Puerto Rico 42-25 over the final two quarters.
