Former San Francisco Giants pitcher Reyes Moronta died in a motorcycle accident in the Dominican Republic.
The 31-year-old was riding a motorcycle in the Villa Gonzalez community on Sunday night when the crash occurred, The Associated Press reported.
“We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Reyes Moronta, who pitched for the Giants, Dodgers, Diamondbacks and Angels over six seasons,” the MLB said Monday in a post on X.
The Mexican Baseball League said in a translated post that it joins “in the grief that overwhelms his family, friends and former colleagues.”
Moronta was born in the Dominican Republic. At 17, he signed as an international free agent with the San Francisco Giants in September 2010. He appeared in 136 games between 2017 and 2021, the team said Monday in a post on X.
The Giants said it was “saddened to learn” of Moronta’s death.
“His warm spirit will be missed by all, and our thoughts are with his friends and family at this difficult time,” the team said.
He also played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, appearing in 22 games in 2022, the Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Angels. He was cut from the Bravos de Leon team of the Mexican League last week, according to the AP. He had posted an 8.69 ERA with 24 strikeouts and four saves in 19 2/3 innings pitched.
