MLB’s annual Trade Deadline comes up late this afternoon, at 5 p.m. Central time. There’s one afternoon game today — Guardians at Tigers — so who knows, maybe we’ll get “hugwatch” as happened during Sunday’s Cubs game with Christopher Morel.
Now that the Commissioner’s office has the right (in the last CBA) to set the deadline on any day from July 28 to Aug. 3, what I think they should do is schedule a league-wide off day sometime in that period and just make it a celebration of trades day, full-day coverage on MLB Network, etc. In 2025, the schedule is set so that there are only two games on July 31, so that’s likely going to be the 2025 deadline. That’s pretty close.
It also wouldn’t hurt to make the deadline earlier than 5 p.m. CT, though I guess I understand why they wouldn’t want to have it too early in the day for West Coast teams.
ICYMI, late last night former Cub Jorge Soler was traded from the Giants to the Braves, along with reliever Luke Jackson, for lefthander Tyler Matzek and minor league outfielder Sabin Ceballos.
For Soler, it’ll be his second gig with the Braves. He was World Series MVP for them in 2021. Jackson also had a previous stint in Atlanta.
This is your place for all deadline day discussion. If the Cubs do make a trade (or trades), of course that’ll be covered separately on the front page.
Have at it!
