NEW YORK — The Yankees were in desperate need of a spark in a win-or-go-home Game 4 of the World Series.
Anthony Volpe, the lifelong Yankee fan, New Jersey native and pride of Delbarton, was there to provide it.
As the Yankees worked to crawl out of a two-run hole, the shortstop ripped a two-out grand slam off the Dodgers’ Daniel Hudson over the left-field wall to put them ahead 5-2 in the bottom of the third inning.
Volpe’s first career postseason home run on a first-pitch slider sent Yankee Stadium into a frenzy. It was the Yankees’ ninth World Series grand slam in their history.
As Volpe trotted back onto the diamond before the fourth inning, fans throughout the stadium chanted his name. Volpe also drew a walk, stole a base and scored the team’s opening run in the second inning.
