GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women’s soccer team fought a courageous battle, but ultimately No. 22 Colorado secured the 1-0 win with a goal in the 71st minute in the Spartans’ home opener on Thursday night at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Spartans held possession for most of the first half as the Buffaloes settled into play. Colorado outshot UNCG 4-2, but neither team was able to put a shot on goal.
Pace of the game increased at the start of the second half. The Buffaloes had the first shot on goal of the game in the 49th minute, as Emma Malone was able to keep Colorado off the board with a kick save. The Spartans’ Rachel Poplin later struck the ball from outside the 18-yard box that was punched over the net by the Buffaloes’ goalkeeper in the 66th minute for UNCG’s best chance on net. Five minutes later, Colorado drew a foul and its goalkeeper Jordan Nytes took the kick from just inside midfield. Shyra James headed the ball to the back right post for the game winner at 71:35. The remaining minutes were a back-and-forth battle.
