Shakib al Hasan becomes first bowler to pick 50 wickets in T20 World Cup history

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib al Hasan became the first bowler to pick 50 wickets in T20 World Cup history on Saturday, June 22 at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua. Notably, the 37-year-old veteran achieved the milestone during the Super 8 clash against India as he dismissed the Indian captain Rohit Sharma in his second over of the innings.

The southpaw didn’t have a memorable start to the game as he was taken to the cleaners by the star Indian batting duo of Rohit and Virat Kohli who hammered him for 15 runs in his first over. His second over also didn’t begin well with Rohit coming down the track to smash him for a maximum over long on and later scored a boundary towards point on the third ball.

However, Shakib finally got the better of the Indian skipper as he got a leading edge which went up in the air and was safely taken by the fielder at point. As a result, the southpaw dismissed Rohit for 23 (11) getting the better of him for the third time in his T20I career.

With Rohit’s wicket, Shakib also completed 50 wickets in T20 World Cup becoming the first player to achieve the feat. Notably, the 37-year-old is the leading wicket-taker in the tournament’s history with 50 scalps to his name from 40 innings at an average of 19.50 and an economy of 6.89 with three four-wicket hauls.

Shakib has played all editions of T20 WC

The former Bangladesh captain is the only player to play in all nine editions of the T20 World Cup along with Rohit. With the bat, Shakib has scored 842 runs from 41 innings in his T20 World Cup career at an average of 24.05 and a strike rate of 119.94 with four fifties.

However, the veteran all-rounder hasn’t been in the best of forms in the ongoing edition of the tournament with just 100 runs from five innings including a half-century against the Netherlands. With the ball, he’s picked up just three wickets from five innings at an average of 33. Hence, the 37-year-old will be eager to perform with both bat and ball against India to help his team stay alive in the competition.
