Who was Shreya Yadav? Dream ends for IAS aspirant in Delhi coaching institute’s flooded basement | Lucknow News

LUCKNOW: Shreya Yadav, a 22-year-old civil services aspirant from Barsawa Hashimpur village in Ambedkar Nagar district, Uttar Pradesh, tragically lost her life along with two other students, Taniya Soni and Naveen Dalvin, when they were trapped inside a flooded basement of Rau’s IAS study circle in Old Rajendra Nagar, New Delhi on Saturday evening.
Abhishek Yadav, Shreya’s elder brother, expressed his anguish and disbelief over the devastating incident.
He described Shreya as the darling of the family, an academically brilliant individual who had the potential to clear the civil services examination and become a district magistrate. “We had taken a loan to pay the course fee of Rs 1.65 lakh, and made full payment last Tuesday, never imagining that their beloved Shreya would lose her life due to the alleged negligence of the system by the end of the week,” he said.
Abhishek questioned the authorities, demanding answers about who gave the NOC to a private institute to run a library in the basement, why the area was flooded, and why the drainage system was not cleared to avoid such a catastrophic situation. He also expressed his anger over the lack of communication from the local administration and the coaching institute regarding Shreya’s death, which they learned about through the media.
Second youngest among three siblings, Shreya had an impressive academic record, scoring around 80 percent in her BSc Agriculture from Kamla Nehru Institute of Technology, Sultanpur district, and around 75 percent in her intermediate. Her other brother Avnish Yadav is pursuing his graduation. Her father, Rajendra Yadav, runs a dairy outlet, and the family resides in Barsawa Hashimpur village, approximately 15 km from the district headquarters.
Dharmendra Yadav, Shreya’s uncle who lives in Ghaziabad, recounted his frantic search for his niece after learning about the incident. He was advised to check the mortuary at Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi, where he had to identify Shreya’s body through documents as the staff refused to let him see her face due to ongoing police investigation. “I firmly believe that Shreya’s death was a result of the system’s negligence, and he demands that the owner of the coaching institute be arrested and booked,” said Dharmendra.
Reports suggest that the room in the basement where the victims were trapped had a biometric door that was allegedly jammed due to a short-circuit caused by rainwater.
Meanwhile, speaking to TOI Sadanand Gupta, the additional district magistrate of Ambedkar Nagar said, “The district administration of Ambedkar Nagar is providing assistance to the family to bring back Shreya’s mortal remains, which are currently undergoing postmortem at Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi.”
