Manchester City were dealt another early blow to their Premier League title hopes as Newcastle secured an impressive home point at St James’ Park.
In the absence of influential midfielder Rodri, out for the season after suffering a serious knee injury against Arsenal, Pep Guardiola’s side lacked their usual calm, composure and creativity. Having taken the lead through Josko Gvardiol ten minutes before half time, the visitors struggled to create consistent chances.
Anthony Gordon equalised from the penalty spot after the forward, playing centrally with Alexander Isak injured, was felled by Ederson having burst beyond the Manchester City defence. Neither side could force a winner late on, with Nick Pope making a fine save from Bernardo Silva to secure a draw. A point apiece suits the hosts rather better than the champions, with Liverpool able to usurp Manchester City at the top of the table with victory at Wolves later.

There are different ways of deducting points from Manchester City. Since Rodri limped off against Arsenal, with a season-ending cruciate ligament injury, they have dropped four. A 100 per cent start to the defence of their title has given way to back-to-back draws. Rodri famously never loses but the most pertinent part of his record may be how often he wins.
And City normally beat Newcastle United, just as Pep Guardiolainvariably triumphs against Eddie Howe. Not this time. Just Howe’s second point against his City counterpart was secured by Anthony Gordon’s penalty.
It is impossible to prove that the Spaniard would have stopped Bruno Guimaraes from supplying the defence-splitting pass that led to it, but tempting to wonder anyway. Rodri can appear omnipotent when present; the loss of the man Guardiola deems the world’s best in his position means many a shortcoming could be attributed to his absence.
Man City enter their post-Rodri era and the major problems have already begun

Pep Guardiola is speaking to TNT now. He starts by saying that “in general we played really good”.
“It’s so difficult. [Their] physicality, they defend so deep, and they defend so well. It’s what happens lately.
“We made a mistake, and after that they were better, but in the end we had the chances to win.
“We had the chances. Pope was brilliant with the saves, but we take the point.
“They played really well,” he adds.

Newcastle’s next match is a midweek Carabao Cup tie, in their re-arranged game against AFC Wimbledon. They then travel to Everton next weekend, in Saturday’s late kick-off.
City’s next match is a midweek Champions League game, away to Slovan Bratislava. They face Fulham at home on Saturday, with that match kicking off at 3pm.
14:48 , Chris Wilson
Anthony Gordon has been speaking to TNT Sports, and he says that he “could feel we’d have that reaction”.
“You could see everyone wasn’t happy. It was hard.
“You never want them to have any sort of advantage. We always felt like we’d get moments, and when we did we took them.
“I think it’s [fifth place] a good place to be consider we’ve been nowhere near what we can do. We’ve got so much more to give.
He finishes off by adding that a trophy is the club’s “priority”.
“That’s our priority. We have to play the same and hold our own standards.”
14:40 , Chris Wilson
That result keeps City top of the table for now – they lead Liverpool and Aston Villa by two points – with 14 – having obviously played a game more.
For Newcastle, the draw takes them up to fifth, though they are only three points behind City themselves.
14:35 , Chris Wilson
So, a point each for Newcastle and City in the early kick-off. People will likely point to Rodri’s absence as the reason City dropped points, but credit to Newcastle for making life difficult for the away side and creating some great chances of their own.
City certainly didn’t look like themselves today, though they were by no means ‘bad’. It remains to be seen what the solution to Rodri’s injury is, but it doesn’t look like whatever was out there today.

97 mins
FULL-TIME!
The referee brings the match to an end in what was a fairly mute ending in comparison to the game itself. No chances of note in added time, and the points are shared after a thoroughly entertaining match on Tyneside.
14:26 , Chris Wilson
96 mins
The corner is cleared but it breaks back to Foden. He floats in a cross but there’s too much on it, and it’s collected by Pope.
14:25 , Chris Wilson
95 mins
It’s all City as the final whistle approaches. Savinho takes on Hall and wins a corner.
14:24 , Chris Wilson
94 mins
Great work from Savinho as he gets his out of his feet and clips in a cross, but Haaland can’t generate enough power on the header.
14:24 , Chris Wilson
93 mins
Newcastle are preparing some late subs as they look to steal the three points.
City come forward once more, but there are no gaps in the home defence.
14:21 , Chris Wilson
90 mins
There’ll be seven minutes of added time.
City spread it wide to Doku, but his cross is too weak. They come again, with Savinho finding Foden. The winger lays it off to Silva, who hits a great volley on the turn, but it was too close to Pope and he saves well.
14:19 , Chris Wilson
88 mins
Murphy skins Akanji in his own half and bursts forward, but he wastes the chance in the end with a poor pass near the City box. Moments later, Foden is guilty of the same as he fails to find Haaland, and Joelinton clears.
Dias fouls Gordon to stop the break, and he gets a yellow card.
14:16 , Chris Wilson
86 mins
Joelinton is briefly down, but he looks okay to carry on.
The two sides have been sloppy in attack over the last few minutes, with both wasting promising openings.
14:15 , Chris Wilson
84 mins
Foden’s set-piece is too deep and Silva can only clip a cross back into the box, which falls to Kovacic, but he fires it wide.
14:13 , Chris Wilson
83 mins
Newcastle continue to press and they come close to catching Ederson out as Gordon chases him down. Moments later, a silly flick from Schar leads to the home side conceding a free-kick on the left wing.
14:12 , Chris Wilson
81 mins
City have brought on Savinho and Jeremy Doku for Lewis and Grealish.
Both sides have a promising attack too, as mgood work from Guimaraes and Gordon almost creates an opening before a good challenge from Silva wins possession and almost frees Haaland in the box.
14:10 , Chris Wilson
79 mins
CLOSE! A brilliant move from Newcastle.
It’s simple too, as Guimaraes sweeps it wide to Livramento. He cuts back a lovely cross to an unmarked Longstaff, but he can only direct his shot wide of the far post.
14:09 , Chris Wilson
78 mins
It’s become a little stop-start in the last few minutes, and again neither side is really settled in possession.
14:06 , Chris Wilson
75 mins
Rico Lewis bursts into the box, but he can only run into a sea of striped shirts. City are applying all the pressure now, as Grealish flashes a ball across goal that Haaland can only head over.
Newcastle bring on Tino Livramento, Joe Willock and Sean Longstaff for Trippier, Tonali and Barnes.
14:03 , Chris Wilson
Richard Jolly at St. James’ Park:
“Phil Foden has come in Manchester City’s search for a winner. Exit Ilkay Gundogan, who has had a quiet game. One of Foden’s finest games last season came against Newcastle, a few days after City won the European Super Cup.”
14:02 , Chris Wilson
72 mins
City come again and the clearing header falls to Haaland. He brings it down and lays it off to Foden, but the England man’s shot is straight at Pope.
Moments later, Gvardiol finds himself in the box again, but his clipped ball only finds the gloves of Pope.
14:00 , Chris Wilson
70 mins
Great ‘keeping from Pope as he flies off his line and into a challenge with Haaland. He punches it clear just as it looked like the Norwegian was clean through.
13:59 , Chris Wilson
68 mins
There’s a very high tempo to this game at the moment, with neither side looking settled. City are trying their usual methodical approach, but Newcastle are managing to keep them at bay for now.
13:55 , Chris Wilson
66 mins
Newcastle are really on top here at the moment. Hall clips in a cross towards Murphy at the back post, but Gvardiol is there with the defensive header.
Phil Foden comes on in place of Ilkay Gundogan.
13:54 , Chris Wilson
64 mins
The home side break forward again and it’s a great run from Gordon. He sees Barnes free on the other side of the box and tries the cross, but it had to be inch-perfect and it just overruns.
13:53 , Chris Wilson
Richard Jolly at St. James’ Park:
“As Alexander Isak is arguably the best penalty taker in the Premier League, Anthony Gordon’s task when standing in for Newcastle’s injured striker was no simple one. But if Gordon did the first part of it by winning a spot kick, he succeeded in another respect by slotting it away. In a game of few chances, Newcastle probably deserve to be level. They have had less of the ball but Gordon has had a nuisance value.”
13:52 , Chris Wilson
62 mins
60 per cent possession for the home side over the last five minutes, and the crowd are roaring them forward.
Joelinton is booked for dragging down Haaland.
13:51 , Chris Wilson
60 mins
A cheap yellow for Kovacic as he slides in late on Tonali.
From the free-kick, it’s nodded on and suddenly Joelinton is clean-through! He’s under pressure as he shapes to shoot, and he goes down under the challenge from Walker, but the referee waves it away!
Moments later, Grealish and Tonali are booked for a coming together.
13:48 , Chris Wilson
59 mins
City try to reply immediately but it’s fired wide by Kovacic. It’s lively at St. James’!
13:47 , Chris Wilson
58 mins
GOAL!
Anthony Gordon steps up after a fair bit of waiting time. His run up is a straightforward one, and he sends Ederson the wrong way as he fires into the bottom left corner!
13:46 , Chris Wilson
55 mins
PENALTY!
Gordon breaks free to latch on to a through ball, and he’s one-v-one with Ederson. The winger takes it past Ederson and he’s brought down by the ‘keeper! Stone wall, and a yellow card for Ederson.
13:43 , Chris Wilson
54 mins
For a split second it looks like Gordon could be clean through, but Akanji finds the extra gear to win the footrace.
13:42 , Chris Wilson
52 mins
There are a couple of brief stoppages as Grealish goes down in the box, and then later elbows Tonali in the chest, but neither event warrants any more action from VAR.
13:41 , Chris Wilson
50 mins
Great play from Lewis as he sweeps it forward to Silva, who has plenty of space as he surges towards the box. He tries to play it through to Grealish, but it’s cut out by his own teammate!
Newcastle counter and Schar almost connects with a header, but it goes wide. The home fans shout for a penalty as Barnes goes down under the challenge from Walker, but the referee isn’t interested.
13:38 , Chris Wilson
48 mins
City have the first meaningful attack of the second half, but it ends as the clipped-in cross is headed away easily.
13:36 , Chris Wilson
46 mins
No changes at half-time. You’d imagine that both managers were happy with their overall performances in the first half, despite Eddie Howe’s side conceding.
A slow start to the second half as City are almost walking in their own half.
13:34 , Chris Wilson
The away side get us underway in the second half.
13:33 , Chris Wilson
The teams are coming back out at St. James, so we’re moments away from the second half beginning.
13:27 , Chris Wilson
An interesting half of football on Tyneside.
City were under some pressure at times, but they rode it out and provided the moment of brilliance necessary, courtesy of Jack Grealish and Josko Gvardiol.
Newcastle are still in this match obviously, but you’d imagine that a second goal for City would kill the game.
The home side need to find that little bit more quality in the final third.
13:23 , Chris Wilson
13:18 , Chris Wilson
46 mins
A good chance for Newcastle as Trippier floats the free-kick forward and Burn heads it on. Joelinton does well to bring it down and swivel to hit a half-volley, and it forces a good save from Ederson!
Newcastle win a corner but as it’s cleared, the whistle goes for half-time.
13:17 , Chris Wilson
45 mins
There’ll be just one minute of added time.
13:16 , Chris Wilson
43 mins
Dangerous play from Grealish again as he cuts inside before laying it off to Akanji, whose shot is deflected behind.
Newcastle clear and it falls to Gordon, who then lays it off to Murphy around the halfway line. He does superbly too, as he skips past one sliding challenge before managing to beat Kovacic for pace down the wing. He tries to play the ball in, but it’s just overrun him, and City clear through a combination of Walker and Kovacic.
13:13 , Chris Wilson
42 mins
Almost two chances in as many seconds as Haaland looks clean through but can’t get it under control. Newcastle clear it straight to Gundogan on the edge of the box, but his ball to Haaland is also off-target and the chance is wasted again.
13:12 , Chris Wilson
Richard Jolly at St. James’ Park:
“An excellent finish from Josko Gvardiol, who is averaging a goal every three games over the last six months (6 in 18). Jack Grealish’s part in the build-up supports the theory that he is in City’s strongest side, despite his own lack of goals.”
13:11 , Chris Wilson
39 mins
A rare waste from Gundogan as the ball breaks to him and he finds himself 2-v-1 with Haaland on his left and Pope off his line. Rather than give it to the Norwegian, he tries the audacious lob, but it’s right into the gloves of Pope.
13:10 , Chris Wilson
38 mins
Newcastle will be disappointed with the scoreline considering their performance so far. The home side have been promising for large periods.
They’re still sweeping forward at every opportunity, but it’s just not clicking so fa, as Trippier’s cross falls to nobody.
13:07 , Chris Wilson
GOAL! And City are ahead from nowhere!
Grealish skips past a challenge on the touchline and feeds it to Gvardiol, who’s made the overlapping run into the box. He dummies, cuts inside and moves it to his right foot, and fires low into the far corner!
13:06 , Chris Wilson
34 mins
Newcastle seem to have sensed an opportunity here, as they’re applying plenty of pressure even when City have the ball in their defensive areas. They’ve won it back in promising areas a few times so far, but haven’t been able to fully capitalise.
13:03 , Chris Wilson
32 mins
Another Newcastle booking as Guimaraes slides in late on Gundogan.
13:02 , Chris Wilson
30 mins
City have definitely settled in the last 10 minutes or so, and they’re starting to enjoy more sustained possession.
The away side win a free-kick around halfway into the Newcastle half. It’staken short, but the chance goes begging as Gundogan’s cross is wild.
13:00 , Chris Wilson
28 mins
Great play from both sides. Haaland shrugs off Burn on halfway to create the opening, and City sweep forward. Silva plays an inviting diagonal ball to the near post, where Haaland is waiting, but Trippier does brilliantly to follow the striker’s run and nip in to clear for a corner.
12:58 , Chris Wilson
26 mins
A promising move from City as Lewis brings the ball down on the edge of the area and lays it off to Haaland. The Norwegian sweeps it to Silva, who tries the cutback to Gundogan, but the pass was behind the German and he scuffs his effort.
12:57 , Chris Wilson
25 mins
Hall delivers a Newcastle corner and Haaland gets his head to it, but he can only flick it backwards and it bounces off Grealish for another corner. The next corner is a good one too, and Schar heads it back across goal, but the away side clear.
We have the first booking of the day too, as Schar scythes down Grealish on the counter.
12:55 , Chris Wilson
Richard Jolly at St. James’ Park
“Manchester City are facing what, after last week, may become a familiar test, of whether they can break down a packed defence without Rodri’s ability to pass the ball forwards. Some of their distribution has been ponderous and while Newcastle haven’t copied all of Arsenal’s second-half gameplan, there are times when they have plenty of players behind the ball.”
12:55 , Chris Wilson
23 mins
Both sides have lacked the necessary quality in the final third so far, but it’s certainly been Newcastle who’ve had the better of the attacking play.
12:53 , Chris Wilson
21 mins
Joelinton is lucky to avoid a booking for a cynical challenge on Grealish, and there’s a break in play as the referee just about manages to avoid a scuffle.
Silva delivers the ball from deep, but Joelinton heads clear.
12:51 , Chris Wilson
19 mins
A bizarre moment as Gvardiola takes a foul throw, and Newcastle have possession once more. City have struggled slightly in the last few minutes.
12:49 , Chris Wilson
17 mins
Newcastle certainly having the better of the attacking play here so far, as Trippier gets free in the box once more and plays in a dangerous cross that is cleared from the six-yard box.
12:47 , Chris Wilson
15 mins
Newcastle aren’t really bothering to press too high, but they’re applying so much pressure in midfield. It almost pays off once more as they win possession near halfway, with a ball over the top finding Gordon, but Barnes can’t make anything of his pass. The ball comes to the other wing and Grealish charges down Trippier’s shot.
12:44 , Chris Wilson
12 mins
There’s some space upfront when Newcastle do win the ball, and they’ve exploited it a couple of times already after some uncharacteristically sloppy play from the visitors.
It’s shipped wide to Murphy again, but his cross is cut out by Gvardiol.
12:41 , Chris Wilson
10 mins
Newcastle fans think they’re almost in as Gordon chases down Ederson, but the Brazilian produces a ridiculous back-heel to get himself out of trouble.
12:40 , Chris Wilson
8 mins
Newcastle sweep forward as Joelinton wins possession and plays it wide to Murphy. The winger plays in a brilliant early cross, but neither of Gordon or Barnes were on the same wavelength.
12:38 , Chris Wilson
7 mins
Haaland has his first involvement as he latches on to a through ball, but his shot is from a difficult angle and it’s straight at Pope.
12:37 , Chris Wilson
5 min
City win the first corner of the match after Akanji’s shot is deflected behind. Gundogan delivers, but the home side get it clear easily enough.
12:35 , Chris Wilson
4 mins
Some sloppiness in possession from both sides early on.
City make their first foray forward, with Grealish’s cross eventually being headed away.
12:34 , Chris Wilson
3 mins
Newcastle get forward again, this time with a long ball, but Trippier can’t quite get past Gvardiol.
Anthony Gordon has started down the middle of the attack, with Murphy on the right wing.
12:32 , Chris Wilson
1 min
The home side get forward early on, with Murphy leading down the right wing. He squares it wide to Barnes, who tries the shot from distance, but it’s blocked.

Jarred Gillett is today’s referee, and he gets us us underway on Tyneside!
12:28 , Chris Wilson
The team are emerging from the tunnel at St. James’, so we’re not far from kick-off.
An intriguing match awaits, with the big question being how City cope without Rodri. It’s worth noting that they coped absolutely fine without the Spaniard in their opening three league matches, though.
Joe Cole says that he thinks City may have been given an extra spark after that injury and last week’s tense encounter with Arsenal – we’ll soon see if he’s correct.

As well as boasting that impressive no-loss streak against Newcastle, City have scored in each of their last 31 Premier League games against the Magpies. This is the longest scoring streak one team has against another in the competition’s history.
In their Premier League history, City have won more games (31), more away games (12) and scored more goals (101) against Newcastle than they have against any other opponent.
Overall, City are unbeaten in their last 28 league games (winning 23 and drawing 5). 24 of these games have been in 2024 – the longest run without a Premier League defeat from the start of a calendar year since Chelsea in 2008 (26).
Erling Haaland has scored 10 goals in five Premier League games this season – the earliest a player has ever reached double figures from the start of a campaign in the competition. The Norwegian could become only the second player ever to score in each of a team’s first six matches of a Premier League season
12:20 , Chris Wilson
Richard Jolly at St. James’ Park:
“It looks like Pep Guardiola has asked Rico Lewis and Mateo Kovacic to share the job of replacing Rodri as they both start at Newcastle. It is also notable that Sandro Tonali makes his first league start for 11 months in the Newcastle midfield as Eddie Howe reacts to defeat at Fulham last week.”
12:15 , Chris Wilson
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has warned Arsenal to expect “a war” as the fallout from last week’s fiery clash between the two clubs continues.
Guardiola has also called on opposite number Mikel Arteta to explain himself after cryptic comments about City claiming that he had “all the information” about the champions.
The Premier League title rivals played out an absorbing 2-2 draw on Sunday that ended with heated exchanges after John Stones snatched a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser for the hosts at the Etihad Stadium.
Guardiola said: “I would say that sometimes the emotions are so there. Gabriel said it perfectly after the match, so this is a war, we are here to provoke the opponent, to push them.”

Newcastle have won just one of their last 33 Premier League games against Manchester City, drawing five and losing 27. The last win was a 2-1 at home in January 2019, when the club were managed by Rafael Benítez.
However, the Magpies are unbeaten in their last 10 Premier League home games, winning six and drawing four. City were the last side to beat them at St James’ Park, in that aforementioned 3-2 in January.
Newcastle have scored in each of their last 21 Premier League home games.
Harvey Barnes has been involved in a goal in each of his last four Premier League games for Newcastle (3 goals and 1 assist).
12:02 , Chris Wilson
These two sides have met a whopping 192 times, with the first meeting dating as far back as October 1893. City have won 78 games between the two, with Newcastle winning 73 and 41 ending as draws.
The two teams met four times last season, with Newcastle winning 1-0 in the League Cup before City got their cup revenge with a 2-0 win in the FA Cup.
In the league, City won both games, with a 1-0 victory at home early in the season followed up with a thrilling 3-2 win at St. James’ Park in January of this year.

Although Mikel Arteta attempted to quieten a lot of the noise around Sunday’s febrile Manchester City vs Arsenal match by Tuesday, some of his staff were still privately ranting about it. It was no different up north. Modern footballers are by now diligently trained to ensure their media comments bring no controversy, but that’s precisely why it was so striking that Bernardo Silva felt the license to just let loose following that 2-2 draw.
“Liverpool always faced us face to face to try and win the game,” the Portuguese said, having already pointedly mentioned how Jurgen Klopp’s side had actually won the Champions League and Premier League. Unlike this Arsenal. Through that very specific reference, Bernardo signalled how this new Premier League rivalry has also gone to a level beyond City-Liverpool. Or perhaps deeper.
There’s a rare rancour to it now very much firing the dressing rooms, in a way that arguably hasn’t been seen since Arsenal’s own great duopoly with Manchester United. City-Liverpool never quite got down to the players or managers in the same way, although there was genuine “hatred” between the clubs.
Man City and Arsenal’s genuine hatred sparks a very different Premier League rivalry

Manchester City appear to have suffered a major blow with Rodri set for a spell on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury against Arsenal.
The midfielder was substituted in the first half of the clash of Premier League rivals at the Etihad Stadium, with the club confirming that he has suffered ligament damage.
It is an injury that may render the 28-year-old unavailable for the rest of the campaign, leaving Pep Guardiola without his key midfield fulcrum.
While the Manchester City manager often rotates elsewhere, Rodri is firmly established as a vital figure at the base of midfield and rarely misses the club’s biggest games.
But an expensively-assembled squad does provide Guardiola with a number of alternative options as he looks to replace the Spaniard, including Mateo Kovacic, Ilkay Gundogan and perhaps even John Stones at times.
Kovacic, Lewis, Stones? How Manchester City replace injured Rodri
11:35 , Chris Wilson
Rodri has been ruled out for the remainder of the season by Pep Guardiola after the Manchester City confirmed the Spanish midfielder has successfully undergone surgery.
Rodri suffered ACL and meniscus damage to his knee in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal.
“He had surgery this morning,” Guardiola said. “ACL and some meniscus. So, next season he will be here. This season is over [for him].”
11:28 , Chris Wilson
Pep Guardiola also makes three changes, with one forced on him after that injury to Rodri. The Spaniard is replaced by Mateo Kovacic.
Both Jeremy Doku and Savio drop out of the attack, with Bernardo Silva moving to right-wing and Jack Grealish coming in on the left. Rico Lewis also comes into midfield.
11:23 , Chris Wilson
Eddie Howe has made three changes to the Newcastle side that lost 3-1 to Fulham last week.
In defence, Lewis Hall replaces Lloyd Kelly at left-back. Alexander Isak drops out of the squad due to injury, and Sandro Tonali comes in to midfield. Joe Willock is replaced by Jacob Murphy too.

Here’s a recap of the early team news – the line-ups will come out at around 11.15am.
Newcastle have no new injury concerns from the loss to Fulham last week, and with their Carabao Cup match against Wimbledon being postponed due to rain, the Magpies missed picking up any injuries in that competition too.
For City, the big injury news is that Rodri has been ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering an ACL injury against Arsenal.
In addition, Pep Guardiola will be without Nathan Ake until after the October international break, while Kevin de Bruyne remains a doubt.
11:00 , Chris Wilson
Despite the injury to Rodri, Newcalte’s mixed form gives City an advantage before the game even starts. City should have the quality to get yet another away win, but expect the Magpies to raise their performance level to make it a close encounter.
Newcastle 1-2 Manchester City.
10:55 , Chris Wilson
Newcastle XI: Pope; Trippier, Schar, Burn, Hall; Joelinton, Guimaraes, Murphy; Gordon, Isak, Barnes.
Man City XI: Ederson; Walker, Dias, Stones, Gvardiol; Silva, Kovacic, Gundogan; Savio, Haaland, Foden.
Odds
Newcastle 10/3
Draw 12/5
Man City 1/2

For City, the big injury news is that Rodri could be ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering an ACL injury against Arsenal.
In addition, Pep Guardiola will be without Nathan Ake until after the October international break, while Kevin de Bruyne remains a doubt.
It remains to be seen how Guardiola will set up without Rodri, with Mateo Kovacic used against Arsenal when the Spaniard came off last week.
10:40 , Chris Wilson
Newcastle have no new injury concerns from the loss to Fulham last week, and with their Carabao Cup match against Wimbledon being postponed due to rain, the Magpies missed picking up any injuries in that competition too.
Eddie Howe will of course pick the strongest side possible against City, though he may be struggling to figure out exactly which players that side consists of after unconvincing displays against Fulham and Wolves.
Lloyd Kelly and Joe Willock were both replaced at half-time in the Magpies’ loss last week, so Lewis Hall and Jacob Murphy could expect to start in their places. Alternatively, Sandro Tonali could come in to make his first league start since the end of his betting ban.
The front line of Barnes, Isak and Gordon seem to have cemented their places in the starting line-up, as have Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton in midfield.

Manchester City travel to Newcastle in the opening match of the weekend in the Premier League on Saturday, with kick-off at 12.30pm at St. James’ Park.
Pep Guardiola’s side come into the match leading the league table by one point over recent rivals Liverpool, though this fixture marks their first without Rodri, after the Spanish midfielder suffered a potentially season-ending injury in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal.
Meanwhile, Newcastle come into their sixth game of the new league season off the back of a disappointing 3-1 loss to Fulham last week, though the Magpies still sit sixth in the league, and just three points behind leaders City.
A win for Eddie Howe’s side would send some moderate shockwaves through the league, but they’ll have to be far better than they were last week if they want to take any points off the champions.

Good afternoon and welcome to The Independent’s live coverage of the weekend’s early kick-off between Newcastle United and Manchester City.
Pep Guardiola’s side top the Premier League table as they travel north to face the Magpies, having beaten Watford in the Carabao Cup in midweek after last weekend’s home draw to Arsenal.
This will be the Cityzens’ first league match without Rodri, after the Spaniard injured his knee in the match against Arsenal, so it remains to be seen how Guardiola will set up in midfield against Eddie Howe’s talented, yet occasionally haphazard, Newcastle side.
