Instant Lookback: Virginia Tech vs. No. 7 Miami

2024-09-28 16:25:03

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech has returned to Hard Rock Stadium for the first time since 2021, facing off against No. 7 Miami in their third road game of the season. Heading into the second half, the Hokies are leading the ranked Hurricanes 24-17.

Starting strong on the road, Tech’s defense made an immediate impact. On Miami’s opening drive, defensive lineman Cole Nelson tackled quarterback Cam Ward forcing a fumble that was quickly scooped up by linebacker Sam Brumfield. The play marked the first time this season the Hurricanes failed to score on their initial possession.

Virginia Tech capitalized on the turnover as quarterback Kyron Drones delivered a 25-yard touchdown pass to tight end Benji Gosnell, marking the first score of the game. Drones has been instrumental throughout the contest, accumulating 91 passing yards while also contributing 41 yards on the ground.

Kicking off the second quarter, safety Mose Phillips II stepped up with a game-changing play, logging his first career interception at the VT 13-yard line and returning it 33 yards. The turnover set up the Hokies’ second touchdown—a 55-yard breakaway run from Bhayshul Tuten, marking his seventh consecutive game finding the end zone. The big run tied the game while shifting momentum in Virginia Tech’s favor. Tuten finished the first half with 81 rushing yards, once again leading the Hokies’ ground game.

Wide receiver Jaylin Lane reclaimed the lead for the Hokies with a dynamic 20-yard rushing touchdown on the next drive, pushing the score to 21-14. In addition to his touchdown, Lane showcased his versatility with two receptions for 21 yards, including a long catch of 17 yards.

John Love added a career-long 57-yard field goal, extending Virginia Tech’s lead to 24-14 and further solidifying their momentum.

Defensively, the nation’s sack leader, defensive lineman Antwaun Powell-Ryland, recorded the first sack of the game on Ward, resulting in a seven-yard loss. Linebacker Caleb Woodson followed suit with a second sack, bringing Ward down for a loss of three yards.

Virginia Tech will start the second half with possession of the ball.
