RUTHERFORDTON, N.C. — Waters in the famous lake where scenes from the movie “Dirty Dancing” were filmed are no longer overflowing the dam that holds them back in western North Carolina.
Rutherford County emergency management officials said engineers evaluated the Lake Lure Dam and determined that it is no longer at imminent risk of failure.
Friday morning, sirens were set off and people were evacuated from areas downstream of the Lake Lure Dam.
Water was periodically released from the dam this week, but there has been too much rain to keep up, officials said.
Lake Lure is a small lake town located about 30 miles east of Asheville.
The town is known for its lake that sits in the center, and for the Lake Lure Inn, a historic inn where the cast and crew of the 1987 film “Dirty Dancing” stayed during filming.
