The 2024 Paris Olympics are underway after competition resumed early Saturday morning. The United States has already found its way to the podium in several aquatic events, winning the delegation’s first gold medal in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay, as well as two silver medals in synchronized diving. Decorated swimmer Katie Ledecky earned her 11th career Olympic medal in the women’s 400m freestyle, losing gold to Australian Ariarne Titmus. Team USA is currently tied with Australia for the most medals so far this Olympics, setting up for an incredible rivalry to watch over the next two weeks.
The United States entered these games with the most Olympic medals ever won in the Summer Games. After Saturday, the U.S. medal count stands at 2,634 total, 1,062 of which have been gold. In fact, the Americans have placed first overall 18 times when it comes to medal count at the Summer Olympics. The former Soviet Union is still in second with 1,010 total medals, Great Britain is third with 918, while 2024 host country France holds the fourth-most medals with 755. Each nation has led the medal count at the conclusion of a Summer Olympics one time, and certainly this year, the French are hoping for a record performance over the next two weeks to top the Americans and narrow the gap with their European friends.
The United States holds the record for most gold medals won in a single games with 83 captured in 1984, one of the country’s host years which took place as the Soviet Union led a 12-nation boycott of the Los Angeles Games. Such lofty totals will likely not happen in 2024. In Paris, America is simply looking to build upon the success that it had three years ago at the Tokyo Games where the U.S. brought home 39 gold medals, 41 silvers and 33 bronze.
