Snoop Dogg Is The MVP Of NBC’s 2024 Paris Olympics Coverage

2024-07-27 23:10:02

The 2024 Paris Olympics began on Friday, and Snoop Dogg is already the talk of the town after he carried the torch before the opening ceremony. Discover what role the rap icon will play as part of NBC’s broadcast team for the Olympics this summer.

The sports event began with the opening ceremony on Friday, where the “Young, Wild and Free” artist carried the Olympic torch in his signature style. On TikTok, NBC Sports shared a montage of Snoop carrying the torch with the funny caption, “This is one time Snoop Dogg probably shouldn’t drop it like it’s hot… 😅🔥 🎥,” referencing his Billboard Hot 100 single.

The rapper then helped host the ceremony with Today’s Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie, NBC’s Mike Tirico, singer and talk show host Kelly Clarkson, and former NFL player Peyton Manning.

Viewers watched the 52-year-old rapper freestyle during the ceremony, chat with Simone Biles’ family, and set the mood for the 2024 Olympic Games by busting out dance moves in his Olympic fit, which you can watch below.

After interviewing Olympian Noah Lyles on the Team USA boat, Tirico handed it over to Snoop, who chimed in, “You know Noah (Lyles) stays smooth as a broom, dipped and whipped, smooth as a booty, so you know he’s gonna be fresh to death, ya dig?”

When asked how he was holding up in the rain, the rapper replied, “I’m chillin like a villain, raindrops falling on my head — but we still playin’ to win, baby.”

What Is Snoop Dogg’s Role At The 2024 Paris Olympics?

Snoop Dogg will serve as a Special Correspondent for NBC and regularly appear in “Primetime in Paris.” The rapper will interact with Team USA athletes and their families, explore Paris, and share his experiences with the primetime audience.

“We’re planning on shaking it up in many different ways, bringing my flavor. It’s the Olympics, y’all. This is the biggest sporting event. We only get it once every four years, so we’re going to make the most of it,” Snoop told Forbes contributor Anne Easton before the games.

He added that he’s a big fan of the Olympics because the event brings together the entire globe and acts as a peace offering.

“I think it’s very special because it’s a time where the whole world can come together and cheer for their countries, cheer for certain athletes. And then at the same time, we come together as one as America,” he explained. “A lot of times in the world, it’s always division and separation, but this is a chance for the world to be one page, for everybody to be together, to cheer for each other, to root for each other. So it’s actually [like] a peace offering.”

NBC Olympics president and executive producer Molly Solomon told USA Today Sports that Snoop expressed interest in the job about a year ago. He attended the track and field trials in June to prepare for his summer gig, and ultimately, track and field earned its largest TV audience in 12 years, according to Sports Business Journal.

Snoop is familiar with the sports world and the Olympic games. His son, Cordell Broadus, played football for UCLA. In May, the Arizona Bowl announced that Snoop was sponsoring the college football game, which was renamed “Snoop Dogg the Arizona Bowl presented by Gin & Juice By Dre and Snoop.”

At the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, he co-hosted the Peacock show “Olympic Highlights with Kevin Hart and Snoop Dogg” with actor Kevin Hart.

“Snoop is already an Olympic gold medal commentator, generating tens of millions of views for his highlights commentary on Peacock of the dressage competition during the Tokyo Olympics,” Soloman shared with Today. That viral performance, alone, earned the rapper a spot as a Special Correspondent in Paris, she added.

“We don’t know what the heck is going to happen every day, but we know he will add his unique perspective to our re-imagined Olympic primetime show.”

Watch Snoop Dogg at the 2024 Summer Olympics from July 26 until Aug. 11 on NBC and Peacock.
