Tennis star Coco Gauff and NBA superstar Lebron James led the American delegation down the Seine River in a rain-soaked and star-studded opening ceremony.

On-and-off showers — the first rain at a Summer Olympics’ opening ceremony in more than 70 years — did not seem to hamper the enthusiasm of the athletes.
“The rain can’t stop us,” James said. “For myself and Coco, for us to be able to represent our country … us being Black kids as well, represent our culture and represent where we come from, it gives everybody so much hope where we come from, and that’s all we can ask for. We take it with the utmost responsibility and the utmost honor.”
James joined a large contingent of American athletes on a boat on the Seine River. With Gauff by his side — both clad in clear ponchos — James bobbed his head as he held the flag at the front of the boat.
For the first time in the history of the Olympic Summer Games, the Opening Ceremony did not take place in a stadium.
Instead, a parade of athletes was be held on the river with boats for each national delegation. The boats were equipped with cameras to allow television and online viewers to see the athletes up close.
