Down to their final out with the game on the line, the Dodgers came through in the clutch.
Dodgers’ first baseman Freddie Freeman crushed a no doubt, walk-off grand slam to give L.A. a 6-3 victory over the New York Yankees in Game 1 of the 2024 World Series.
The game winning home run was the first ever walk-off grand slam in World Series history.
After Yankees left fielder Alex Verdugo made a great running catch into the stands to retire Shohei Ohtani and hold the runners at first and second base. Manager Aaron Boone still decided to walk Mookie Betts to load the bases for Freeman and coincidingly bring in Nestor Cortes for the lefty-vs-lefty-matchup, but the southpaw hadn’t pitched since Sept. 18 as he was dealing with an elbow injury and missed both the ALDS and ALCS before being activated ahead of Game 1.
The 2020 National League MVP made Boone pay for that decision, clubbing the first pitch he saw 423 feet to the right field bleachers, sending Los Angeles in a frenzy as the organization is now only three wins away from their second World Series in five years.
