FULLERTON, Calif. – An early goal in the third minute of play was the difference as the No. 2 Stanford Cardinal defeated the Cal State Fullerton Titans women’s soccer team 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Titan Stadium.
On Stanford’s first shot of the game with 2:13 on the clock, Andrea Kitahata scored the game’s only goal on a shot that just went over the Titan’s goalkeepers glove.
The Titan’s goalkeeper, Ranson, was stellar after that and made a new career-high 13 saves after facing 27 Stanford shots.
Last year’s national runner up dominated most of possession and scoring opportunities as they outshot the Titans 27-to-5 for the game. The Titans defense was able to manage most of the attempts and Ranson was there to clean up any scoring opportunities that got by.
The Titans had a few good opportunities to score in the match. In the 68th minute, the Titans ran a good set piece where Kaylin Raibon’s header just went wide of the goal. Olivia Peraza had an opportunity in the 83rd minute but she rushed her shot wide right.
The Titans will continue their string of playing three straight ACC opponents as they head on their first road game of the season. They will take on the Cal Golden Bears on Thursday, August 29th. Kick-off is set for 4:00 PM at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley, California.
NOTES: Ranson’s 13 saves were tied for the 4th most saves made by a Titan goalkeeper in a game with Suzy Strazzulla and Heidi Clauss. For their career, Ranson has now made over 200 saves (204) and is now in fourth place all-time. Next up on the list is Laura Janke (235). The Titans will be without Talei Moodie for the next few games as she heads to Colombia to participate in the U-20 World Cup as a member of the Fiji U-20 National Team.
