The excitement by the Florida State football fan base was at an all-time high this off-season after the Seminoles accomplished an undefeated regular season and a conference championship in 2023. The College Football Playoff Committee snub in December was supposed to be the something that the squad needed for motivation.
However, it all came crashing down on Saturday afternoon as Florida State was defeated by a score of 24-21 by the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in Dublin, Ireland.
Frustrating is something that cannot be comprehended as the Seminoles’ defense could stop a nose bleed when Georgia Tech ran the football. The Yellow Jackets combined to have 190 rushing yards
It was not all on the defense as the Florida State offense had a whopping 291 total yards where the longest reception was made by running back Lawrance Toafili who had a 21-yard catch. It seemed like quarterback transfer DJ Uiagalelei could never get in rhythm minus the first scripted offensive drive. The football never went downfield and the Georgia Tech defense was ready for the run.
Overall, it seemed like head football coach Mike Norvell and his coaching staff were outcoached in the first game of the 2024 season. It was quite embarrassing for a program that had a combined 23-4 record over the past two seasons.
While I realize that Florida State had ten NFL Draft picks, elite programs can withstand the players graduating, transferring, and going to the NFL. It looks like Norvell might have more than an uphill battle than most might have thought.
The sky is not falling, but this is a very bad look for a Florida State team that was picked to win the ACC this season and they just lost to a Georgia Tech squad that had a projected over/under win total of 4.5.
There are so many things that need to be improved upon. I am very disappointed in what transpired on Saturday. Looks like we will have several topics to discuss this week…
Nonetheless, this squad has to play better if it wants to beat Boston College on Labor Day night (a team that they struggled with in 2023).
