Hawks Sweep Curry College In Wednesday Conference Play

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Hartford volleyball picked up a victory on Wednesday evening defeating Curry College by a 3-0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-17) final. 

Rapid Recap: 

  • Hartford got off to a hot start with a 9-2 run to open the match. Sophomore Jordan Murphy (East Hampton, Conn.) put up two commanding kills for the Hawks in that run and freshman Tiffany Mendez (Bay Shore, N.Y.) had a striking service ace that set the tone for the rest of the match. The Colonels forced a pair of errors on the Hawks to close the gap to 9-5 moving through the first set. Sophomore Liahnna Orange (Linden, N.J.) found her rhythm with three powerful service aces back to back to pull away from the Colonels, 15-5. The Colonels continued to fight with a service ace off of the hands of DeForest, 16-9. Sophomore Kalle Legassey (Prospect, Conn.) broke the Colonels momentum serving up two aces in her first minutes off the bench. The Hawks ended the first set with fire; points coming from across the team; sophomore Jenna Murphy (East Hampton, Conn.) spiked a swift kill, Mendez followed right after with another powerful kill. Junior Kylee Connally (Dallas, Texas) sealed the first set with a dominating service ace 25-10.
  • Hartford opened the second set with their momentum gained in the first set. Sophomore Jenna Murphy (East Hampton, Conn.) put up the first points for the Hawks with back to back kills to gain the lead 2-1. The Colonels forced a few errors on the Hawks to claim some real estate on the board and match the Hawks at 2-2. Junior Sydney Ball (Enfield /Windsor Locks, Conn.) took control of this second set with back to back kills that widened their lead to 7-2. The Colonels continued to challenge the Hawks forcing errors and slipping an ace by the team off the hands of Kramer. Score tightened to 8-6. Ball answered with a an ace of her own for the Hawks. The points exchange continued through the middle of the set with score evening out to 13-13 with each team claiming errors of their own. The Hawks were fired up by this even score and Jor. Murphy put up 3 stellar kills and two blocks within a six point run. Hawks lead 19-13. Hawks pulled the rest of this set away forcing Colonels errors and with a service ace off of the hands of junior Amaiya Lu (Lawrence, Mass.) Hawks finished the second set 25-16.
  • The Hawks and Colonels set the fans up for an exciting third set. The Colonels took charge in the early minutes of the final set with a 12-9 lead. The Hawks struggled to connect consecutive points while the Colonels seemed to find their rhythm. Orange broke up the Colonels run with a striking kill to shrink the differential, 12-10. Junior Juliana Robinshaw (South Windsor, Conn.) put up a powerful kill on the board that pushed the Hawks momentum. Sophomore Kaia Karcich (Deep River, Conn.) snuck in her first point of the match with an aggressive service ace to take the lead 17-16. The Hawks secured a five-point run quickly followed by a seven point run to claim their victory over the Colonels; 25-17. Robinshaw and Mendez lead the team in the final points of the match.

Inside the Numbers:

  • Junior Juliana Robinshaw (South Windsor, Conn.) spiked five kills and two digs for the Hawks tonight to be one of the leaders with six points in the match.
  • Junior Sydney Ball (Enfield, Conn.) showcased an impressive night for the Hawk six kills and four digs added her season total of 68 digs.
  • The Colonels Mattheson lead their team defensively with six digs.

“Tonight we really played as a team we have been working hard lately and its nice to show it in a win”, said junior Juliana Robinshaw (South Windsor, Conn.). It is always good to be home and we really wanted to come out, compete, and have fun and I think that really showed. Moving forward this win is great for the team we want to continue to win and compete in this conference and that is all that we as a team are focused on., Our passers did a great job tonight to get the balls to our hands and to help run our offense smoothly. I saw opportunities and I took them tonight. We as a team are looking to build off this momentum to prepare for Saturday’s match against Roger Williams.”
