Jerry Jones, owner and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys, has been candid about the Cowboys‘ season, which has not been very good and why he did not pursue more players in the offseason.
On Tuesday, Jones appeared on the 105.3 The Fan radio show and addressed questions regarding Dallas’ lack of offseason moves, especially the failure to sign star former Tennessee Titans’ running back Derrick Henry.
“In my mind, we’re not playing very good football right now at all, and it’s beyond whether or not we have Derrick Henry… I don’t know if he’d have the career year in our situation,” Jones said, emphasizing the potential of the current roster.
Henry signed with the Baltimore Ravens in September 2024, and so far this season, he has been a standout player. Heading into Week 8, he has recorded 134 carries for 873 yards and eight touchdowns. His exceptional performance has been a key factor in the Ravens’ success this season.
The Cowboys are currently 3-3, and are coming off a much-needed bye week. Dallas is gearing up to face the San Francisco 49ers in a Week 8 ‘Sunday Night Football’ matchup.

Derrick Henry signed a two-year contract valued at up to $16 million, with $9 million guaranteed, with the Baltimore Ravens in September. Jones indicated this was one huge reason they did not pursue the football star.
“Derrick Henry didn’t fit our plans due to salary cap management. We needed to consider the players we would be signing in the coming weeks, as well as those we plan to sign in the future,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan, reassuring the audience about the team’s strategic thinking.
The Cowboys’ players that received extensions were CeeDee Lamb, who reached a four-year, $136 million extension in August, and quarterback Dak Prescott, who reached a four-year, $240 million extension in September. These extensions significantly impacted the Cowboys’ salary cap, making it difficult to pursue high-value players like Derrick Henry.
