KANPUR: Three men died of asphyxiation by toxic gas when they descended into a well in Badagaon under the limits of Bisanda police station of Banda district, on Sunday.
The incident took place when a man, who was cutting an iron fence, descended into an unused well into which his slipper fell. The toxic gas inside the well made him unconscious. Two of his neighbours entered the well to rescue him but they fainted too.
On being informed, police along with ADM Rajesh Verma reached the site.Fire brigade personnel, equipped with oxygen masks, brought the three men out of the well. Police and district administration sent them to Rani Durgawati Medical College, where doctors declared all three dead. Initial reports said their death was caused by toxic gas in the well.
The deceased were identified as Anil Patel (40), son of Mohanlal Patel, and his neighbours, Sandeep Verma (21) and Bala Verma (25), all residents of Badagaon.
ADM Banda Rajesh Kumar and sub-divisional magistrate Naman Mehta, along with circle officer Rajveer Singh and their subordinates, supervised the rescue operation.
SP Ankur Agarwal said, the deaths were caused by toxic gas emanating from the old unused well and fforts are being made to provide all possible assistance to the families of the deceased.
