Caitlin Clark gets poked in the eye (literally) and the Indiana Fever get punched in the mouth (figuratively). The Connecticut Sun impose their will to a 93-69 Game 1 WNBA playoffs victory.
Game 2 of the best-of-3 series is Wednesday night in Connecticut. Game 3, if necessary, is Friday in Indianapolis.
Kelsey Mitchell scores 21 points and Aliyah Boston has 17 with 11 rebounds for the Fever. Cailtin Clark has 11 as she struggles mightily from the field. Mitchell and Clark combine for 4-of-23 3-point shooting. Damiris Dontas scores 12 off the bench.
Marina Mabrey comes off the Connecticut bench for 27 points, and Alyssa Thomas has a triple-double (13 points, 12 assists, 10 rebounds). DeWanna Bonner scores 22.
The Fever manage 20 first-quarter points, but Connecticut’s defense gets stingier the rest of the way. Indiana shoots 40.3% from the field and 21.4% on 3s.
Clark got poked in the right as in the first quarter by Connecticut’s DiJonai Carrington but didn’t miss any court time. She scored 11 points (4-of-17 shooting, 2-of-13 3-pointers, 1-of-2 free throws), 8 assists, 4 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 turnovers.
