Donald Trump reacted to the idea of Michelle Obama running against him, saying he “wouldn’t be worried” about it.
Speculation about who the Democratic Party is going to put forward as its nominee has been rife since President Joe Biden stepped down on Sunday.
Although Kamala Harris so far seems the most likely choice, with Biden and other Democrat heavyweights giving her their backing, rumors about other possibilities have continued.
These have included Obama as a candidate, despite her repeatedly saying that she has no interest in running.
Trump responded to this possibility during an interview on Fox News‘ Jesse Watters Primetime, which is set to air later on Monday, accompanied by his running mate JD Vance.
Watters asked Trump: “[The Democrats are] gonna cook up something at the [Democratic] convention. They might throw Gretchen Whitmer at you, they might throw Gavin Newsom at you, they might throw Michelle Obama at you.”
Trump responded: “I wouldn’t be worried about any of them. Look, they have bad policies—forget about the people. They have an open-border policy, they have a high-tax policy, they have a bad military policy. The whole world is going woke—their world is going woke.”
He went on: “The whole thing is a mess. If we don’t win this election, we may never have another election. I’m telling you, this may be our last election.”
Rumors about Michelle Obama running have been spurred on by the fact that her husband former President Barack Obama seemingly stopped short of endorsing Harris in his first statement after Biden pulled out of the race for the White House.
Barack Obama said: “We will be navigating uncharted waters in the days ahead. But I have extraordinary confidence that the leaders of our party will be able to create a process from which an outstanding nominee emerges.
“I believe that Joe Biden’s vision of a generous, prosperous, and united America that provides opportunity for everyone will be on full display at the Democratic convention in August. And I expect that every single one of us are prepared to carry that message of hope and progress forward into November and beyond.”
Michelle Obama is one of the only hypothetical Democratic candidates who some surveys have shown could beat Trump, who is currently enjoying a lead in the polls.
Recently, Republican Senator Kevin Cramer told New York Magazine: “Michelle Obama would probably be the one person that could step in and keep the party united and probably provide a little bit of a moving start because of her obvious notoriety”.
She has previously said she would not run several times, including during a Netflix special with Oprah, Winfrey when she said: “Politics is hard. And the people who get into it… you’ve got to want it. It’s got to be in your soul because it is so important. It is not in my soul.”
Newsweek has contacted Michelle Obama, via her and her husband’s press inquiries form, for comment.
