West Virginia Football Recao: Fourth-Quarter Comeback Pushes Mountaineers Past Kansas in Morgantown

2024-09-22 22:35:02

After a nearly two-hour weather delay in Morgantown, the West Virginia Mountaineers (2-2, 1-0 Big 12) rallied late to secure a 32-28 win over the Kansas Jayhawks (1-3, 0-1 Big 12) in their Big 12 Conference opener. Down 28-25 with just over two minutes remaining, Garrett Greene led the Mountaineers on a game-winning drive, culminating in a 15-yard touchdown pass to Rodney Gallagher. On Kansas’ final possession, Tyrin Bradley sealed the game with a strip sack, giving WVU a much-needed bounce-back win after their late collapse against Pitt the previous week.

The game was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams trading big plays. WVU struck first with an early touchdown, but Kansas responded, tying the game 14-14 early in the second half. Kansas surged ahead 28-17 after a 32-yard trick play, but the Mountaineers clawed back with a quick touchdown and a successful two-point conversion. In the end, WVU’s defense came up big when it mattered, stopping Kansas on third down and setting up Greene’s heroic final drive.

It Was Over When

It was over when Tyrin Bradley delivered a game-sealing strip sack on Kansas’ final drive, stopping their momentum and ensuring WVU held on for the win after Garrett Greene’s touchdown pass to Rodney Gallagher.

By The Numbers

Garrett Greene completed 15 of 30 passes (50%) for 295 yards, tossing two touchdowns and two interceptions while also leading the team on the ground with 87 rushing yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. His top target, Hudson Clement, had a standout performance, catching 7 of 9 passes for 150 yards, including a long gain of 39 yards.

Defensively, TJ Jackson contributed with 6 tackles, highlighted by a sack, giving him 3.5 for the season. Josiah Trotter led the defense with 11 total tackles, 6 of which were solo efforts.

What’s Next

West Virginia enters their bye week with momentum, giving them extra time to prepare for their upcoming matchup against No. 14 Oklahoma State. The Mountaineers will face the Cowboys in Stillwater on October 5th. Kickoff time and broadcast information are still to be determined.
