The NASCAR Cup Series returns to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval in 2024 after three years racing on the IMS road course, and a winner on the road course will lead the field. The first stage in the 160-lap race on the 2.5-mile oval lasts 50 laps, and the the second stage is another 50 laps. The final stage is 60 laps.
Tyler Reddick, who won the 2022 Cup race on the IMS road course, takes the pole position at 181.932 mph in the 10-car shootout after advancing through the first round of qualifying. He has won at Talladega Superspeedway in 2024.
The Brickyard 400 is the 23rd points-paying race in the 26-race Cup regular season, after which 16 drivers will compete in 10 playoff races. A series champion will be crowned on Nov. 10.

Kyle Larson picks up his NASCAR Cup Series-leading 4th victory of the season in double overtime. He charges through the field into contention late in regulation, and stays ahead of Ryan Blaney on the final green flag. Tyler Reddick gets by Blaney for 2nd.
Larson picks up his 27th career Cup win.
“It’s such a prestigious place and such hallowed ground,” Larson said on the front stretch after parking on the Yard of Bricks. “I love you, Indiana fans, and I know you love me, too. How about we come back next May and try to kiss the bricks in the Indy car?”
Larson finished 18th in the Indianapolis 500 in May as he prepared for the Indy-NASCAR double. However, weather played havoc with his effort. Rain in Indianapolis delayed the Indy 500 start by 4 hours. Larson ran well, leading 4 laps, before committing a pit road speeding penalty.
After finishing in Indy, he flew to Charlotte, N.C., for the Coca-Cola 600, which was already underway. Justin Allgaier drove Larson’s car, but rain halted the Cup race, preventing Larson from climbing in. Larson received a waiver from NASCAR to pursue the series championship.
Double overtime restart: Kyle Larson, on the inside, quickly coasts away from Ryan Blaney. Ryan Preece crashes coming out of Turn 2 but the race continues through the end of the lap. Then the caution flies, and Kyle Larson wins.
Overtime restart: Brad Keselowski heads into the pits and there’s a big crash in Turn 1. John Hunter Nemechek, Daniel Hemric, Alex Bowman and Denny Hamlin are involved. Red flag. Kyle Larson is shown as the leader, Ryan Blaney 2nd.
Blaney didn’t like Larson being allowed to come to the front as the race resumed, to say the least.
Lap 158: Kyle Busch, who was running 6th, hits the wall after contact with Denny Hamlin. Caution, followed by overtime.
Lap 155: It’s Brad Keselowski, Ryan Blaney and Kyle Larson. Keselowski has run more than 50 laps since his last pit stop.
Lap 152: Kyle Larson is 3rd.
Lap 150: Kyle Larson is picking his way through the field and is up to 4th. Brad Keselowski leads, with Ryan Blaney 2nd and Daniel Hemric 3rd.
Lap 140: Brad Keselowski remains in the lead, with Ryan Blaney, Zane Smith, Daniel Hemric and Denny Hamlin rounding out the top 5.
Lap 130 lap restart: Drivers who pitted on Lap 112 believe they need 1 more caution to stretch fuel to the end. Tops among them is Ryan Blaney in 2nd. Brad Keselowski, who will have to pit again, leads.
Lap 125: Martin Truex Jr. spins by himself and crashes. Caution.
Lap 115 restart: Ross Chastain leads, with John Hunter Nemechek and Alex Bowman close. Kyle Larson is 4th. Among the cars that pitted during the recent caution, Ryan Blaney is in the best position (11th).
Lap 112: During the caution, race leader Denny Hamlin pits, hoping he can stretch fuel to the end.
Lap 110 restart: Joey Logano and Jimmie Johnson crash in Turn 1. Johnson drives back to pit road, but Logano is done. Caution.
Lap 105 restart: Denny Hamlin leads, followed by Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and John Hunter Nemechek. Martin Truex Jr. touches the wall and continues to the pits. Josh Berry gets into the wall harder. Caution.
Stage 2 complete at Lap 100: Bubba Wallace wins, followed by Chase Elliott, Denny Hamlin, Ryan Blaney and John Hunter Nemechek.
Lap 90: Bubba Wallace maintains a 1-second lead on Chase Elliott.
Lap 79 restart: Bubba Wallace holds off Chase Elliott for the lead. Denny Hamlin slips inside to take 3rd.
Lap 74: A.J. Allmendinger. William Byron and Harrison Burton crash coming out of Turn 2. Chase Briscoe, Ryan Preece are touched but continue. Todd Gilliland had taken the lead from 3rd place. Caution.
Lap 70: Most of the field pits. Kyle Busch has the lead, followed by Bubba Wallace and Todd Gilliland.
Lap 69: Cody Ware’s tire shreds. Caution.
Lap 65: John Hunter Nemechek leads Tyler Reddick and Kyle Busch.
Lap 55 restart: Tyler Reddick leads Michael McDowell on a clean first green lap of Stage 2.
Lap 52 pit stops: Harris Burton gains 10 positions and Bubba Wallace 9.
Stage 1 complete at Lap 50: Denny Hamlin wins, followed by Kyle Larson, Ryan Blaney, William Byron and Tyler Reddick.
Lap 40: Brad Keselowski is the only car yet to pit and leads.
Lap 30: Tyler Reddick keeps the lead by 1.5 seconds over Michael McDowell. The top 25 cars have not pitted. Chase Elliott is assessed a blend line violation after pitting, returning to a racing line too soon in Turn 2.
Elliott disagrees with the penalty, to put it mildly.
Lap 20: Top 3 remain the same.
Lap 10: Tyler Reddick leads Chase Elliott by 1.2 seconds, with Denny Hamlin 3rd.
Lap 1: Tyler Reddick leads Denny Hamlin as the field gets through the opening lap clean.
