Streamer Disney+, which remains in search of an original breakout hit series, has opted against a second season of The Acolyte. Also known as Star Wars: The Acolyte, the series was set at the end of the Star Wars franchise’s High Republic era, approximately 100 years before Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.
Described as a mystery-thriller, The Acolyte took viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of that era. In the series, a former Padawan reunited with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes, but the forces they confronted were more sinister than they ever anticipated.
The cast included Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae, Charlie Barnett, Dafne Keen, Rebecca Henderson, Jodie Turner-SMith, Carrie-Anne Moss, Manny Sith, Dean-Charles-Chapman, Joonas Suotamo, Margarita Levieva, Harry Trevaldwyn and David Harewood.
The Acolyte premiered with two episodes on June 4, drawing a reported 4.8 million viewers in its first day. After this promising debut, however, viewers tuned out in droves. Eight episodes were produced in total. The now series finale of The Acolyte aired on July 16.
Disney+ series The Mandalorian, which began in 2019, will continue.
