LSU Football vs. Arkansas Razorbacks in Week 8

No. 8 LSU travels to Fayetteville to take on Taylen Green and the Arkansas Razorbacks in the first of back-to-back SEC road games.

Garrett Nussmeier and Co. are fresh off of an emotional Week 7 victory over Ole Miss after battling back to claim a 29-26 overtime win.

Now, it’s full steam ahead to the Razorbacks with the Bayou Bengals looking to carry their momentum into Saturday night.

Here’s what Brian Kelly said of the matchup, pregame updates and a live thread from Saturday night in Fayetteville:

“Big, physical, can run,” Kelly said of Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green. “Makes plays with his arms and legs. They lead the SEC in third down conversions. This is a formidable offense. Big offensive line. I think they’ve done a great job defensively. Big and physical up front. Really, well designed and fundamentally sound. It will be a great challenge for us and one that we will have to play well on the road.”

– LSU wide receiver Chris Hilton Jr. is inactive for Saturday night against the Razorbacks. He remains sidelined with an ankle injury suffered during Fall Camp and is yet to make his 2024 debut.

– LSU wide receiver CJ Daniels is active for Week 8. The first-year Tiger missed Week 7 against Ole Miss after reaggravating a knee injury suffered in the past. Now, he’s back in the mix.

– LSU tight end Trey’Dez Green is expected to see more snaps on Saturday in a slot/receiver role for the Tigers. He’s been working with the receivers with Kelly and Co. looking to work him into the rotation.

– LSU safety Jordan Allen did not make the trip to Fayetteville, according to The Advocate. Allen has worked in as a backup defensive back, but will not be with the Tigers in Week 8.

– LSU offensive lineman Tyree Adams is out for Saturday after undergoing surgery for a sports hernia on Wednesday.

– Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green is active against the Bayou Bengals. After suffering a knee injury in Week 6, he’s cleared and off of the Injury Report. He’s a full go.

First Quarter

– Arkansas has won the opening coin toss and defers to the second half. LSU will get the ball first and kickoff to start the third quarter.

– LSU rolls out Trey’Dez Green with the starting wide receivers alongside CJ Daniels and Kyren Lacy. Green made the move from tight end to receiver this week. Now, he’s on the field for the first snap and then some on Saturday.

– Garrett Nussmeier and Co. come shot out of a cannon offensively to start this one. Nussmeier goes 4-for-4 through the air for 41 yards with the rushing attack coming alive as well courtesy of Caden Durham. Durham punches in the touchdown on a 22-yard run to put the Tigers up early. 8-play, 75-yard scoring drive.

– Arkansas quickly fights into LSU territory after marching down the field led by signal-caller Taylen Green. He’s 2-for-3 to start the drive for 36 yards with a pair of completions to Andrew Armstrong. Razorbacks down to the LSU 28-yard line. 7:25 remaining in the quarter.

– LSU blitz’s Arkansas on 3rd-and-8 with Taylen Green scrambling for a five-yard gain. Razorbacks elect to kick the field goal on 4th-and-3. Matthew Shipley’s 42-yard attempt is no good. LSU takes over on their own 23-yard line.

– Garrett Nussmeier is in a rhythm to start things off in Fayetteville. He’s 6-for-7 through the air with 69 yards in the 1st quarter. He’s connected with Kyren Lacy and Aaron Anderson for chunk yard gains to put LSU on the Arkansas 45-yard line on the second offensive drive. 4:07 remaining in the quarter.

– LSU is gashing Arkansas in the run game on the first two drives of the game led by freshman phenom Caden Durham. He’s up to 43 yards on five carries while Josh Williams has eight yards on one carry. Tigers are averaging 8.5 yards per rush.

– LSU kicker Damian Ramos drills a 33-yard field goal after a 14-play, 60-yard drive by the Tigers. Nussmeier goes 5-for-10 through the air with 52 yards. LSU 10, Arkansas 0

– Arkansas fumbles the ball on the first play of the ensuing drive. LSU linebacker Greg Penn III forces the fumble and Major Burns recovers. Tigers take over on the Arkansas 38-yard line.

Second Quarter

– LSU begins the 2nd quarter with the ball after forcing a fumble to end the first frame. Tigers unable to get anything to click with Damian Ramos tying his career-high with a 48-yard field goal.

Score Update: LSU 13, Arkansas 0

– Arkansas marches into LSU territory behind a perfect drive from Taylen Green so far. He’s 4-for-4 through the air with 34 yards while showcasing his dual-threat ability with his legs to get to the LSU 25-yard line.

– Green drops back in the pocket, evaluates his reads and finds his favorite target, Andrew Armstrong, for the 25-yard touchdown reception. Razorbacks make it a one-score game in Fayetteville. 9-play, 75-yard scoring drive. 8:25 remaining in the half.

Score Update: LSU 13, Arkansas 7

– LSU’s rushing attack remains lethal through the 2nd quarter with the Tigers falling back on the three-headed snake of Caden Durham, Josh Williams and Kaleb Jackson leading LSU inside the red-zone.

– LSU is in the midst of the most undisciplined first half of the Brian Kelly Era. Eight penalties totaling 50 yards through the first two quarters. Seven of them coming on false starts. After a handful of penalties on the drive, LSU settles for another field goal after getting inside the red-zone. Damian Ramos knocks in the 33-yard attempt.

Score Update: LSU 16, Arkansas 7

– Taylen Green has settled in for the Razorbacks in the 2nd quarter. He’s 10-for-12 through the air for 124 yards in the first half. The connection with Andrew Armstrong has been on full display with his safety net hauling in five receptions for 83 yards and a score. Razorbacks are on their own 44-yard line with 1:57 remaining in the half.

– LSU’s defense gets off of the field after a critical 3rd-and-10 stop. Green tosses back-to-back-to-back incompletions with the Razorbacks punting it away with 1:21 remaining in the half. Devin Bale punts it to the one-yard line with LSU taking over.

Third Quarter

– LSU kicks it off to the Razorbacks to start the 2nd half with Aeron Burrell booting it through the back of the end-zone. Arkansas takes over at the 25-yard line to start the final two quarters.

– LSU LB Greg Penn gets shaken up on the first play of the 2nd half with true freshman Davhon Keys entering the game for the injured Penn. The Tigers have worked in both Keys and Xavier Atkins in with the second-team linebackers.

– Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green has been utilizing the middle of the field all night with the Razorbacks offense attacking the linebackers on crossing routes. Green and Co. are 4-for-6 on third down conversions early in the 3rd quarter.

– The Razorbacks’ offense stalls after an 11-play, 42-yard drive. Matthew Shipley drills a 51-yard field goal for Arkansas to make it a one-score game early in the 3rd quarter.

– LSU’s self-inflicted wounds are burying them tonight in Fayetteville. The Bayou Bengals are up to 10 penalties for 75 yards. Eight penalties on the offensive line paired with two offensive pass interference calls on Kyren Lacy. Lacy hauls in a reception on 3rd-and-long to get into field goal range, but an OPI call forces the Tigers to punt. Razorbacks take over on their own 14-yard line with 5:04 remaining in the 3rd quarter.

– LSU linebacker Whit Weeks changes the momentum in this one in the blink of an eye after an interception inside the 10-yard line. Tigers immediately capitalize and score a touchdown with Caden Durham punching in the score. LSU converts on the two-point conversion.

Score Update: LSU 24, Arkansas 10

– Arkansas is forced to punt it away after a 6-play drive totaling 28 yards. Whit Weeks comes up with a critical sack and the Tigers take over. The sophomore linebacker is everywhere tonight. 8 tackles, 1 sack, 1 tackle for loss and one interception.

End of 3Q: LSU 24, Arkansas 10

Fourth Quarter

– The LSU offense gets stuck in Arkansas territory after an 8-play, 50-yard drive. Nussmeier and Co. drive down the field after chewing over five minutes off the game clock. Damian Ramos drills his fourth field goal of the game to extend the LSU lead.

Score Update: LSU 27, Arkansas 10

– LSU’s pass rush has been sensational tonight in Fayetteville after getting in the backfield to slow down Taylen Green. It was on the Tigers’ list of “must do’s” in order to escape with a win over Arkansas. Now, it’s becoming a reality. LSU forces another Razorbacks punt with 9:59 remaining.
