UPDATE: The Oklahoma State Cowboys suffered their fourth straight loss as the 13th-ranked BYU Cougars rallied for a 38-35 win on Friday in Week 8 of the college football season.
PROVO, Utah — Coach Mike Gundy and the Oklahoma State Cowboys will try to avoid a four-game losing streak Friday night when they face the 13th-ranked BYU Cougars at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
The Cowboys (3-3, 0-3 Big 12) have dropped their first three league games — 22-19 to Utah on Sept. 21 and 42-20 at Kansas State on Sept. 28 and 38-14 to West Virginia on Oct. 5.
Coach Kalani Sitake and the Cougars (6-0, 3-0) have already outperformed last season’s 5-7 mark with conference wins over Kansas State, Baylor and Arizona.

OSU’s skid in Big 12 play continued with a fourth straight loss, this one in heartbreaking fashion.
The Cowboys‘ trick play in the final seconds was not enough just seconds after BYU stunningly took the lead for good.
OSU is 0-4 in Big 12 play, while BYU remains undefeated.

All OSU’s defense needed was a stop.
Instead, BYU got big play after big play, namely a 35-yard TD pass from Jake Retzlaff to Darius Lassiter, who sidestepped three tackles into the end zone for the lead with 10 seconds left.
It took BYU eight plays to go 75 yards.

On long drive that last 8 minutes and 22 seconds, the Cowboys took the lead on a 6-yard TD reception by Brennan Presley from Alan Bowman, showing grittiness on a drive that nearly staff multiple times.
The Cowboys had several key moments on the drive.
A 1-yard dive by true freshman running back Rodney Fields Jr. on fourth-and-1 that got just enough to extend the drive, withstanding an officials review.
A run by quarterback Alan Bowman that appeared to be a first down but was not overturned. Instead, the Cowboys get the first down anyway.
Then, on third-and-8, Bowman connects with Brennan Presley for a 21-yard play on a well-designed screen to set up the eventual go-ahead score.

OSU’s defense bent but did not break, limiting BYU to a 41-yard field goal by Will Ferrin.
BYU again relived heavily on the run game on the drive, rushing the football six times for 20 yards.

It’s not been the ideal passing night for OSU quarterback Alan Bowman. So, why not make an impactr in a different way?
The veteran caught a 16-yard TD pass on a trick play, receiving a pass from slot receiver Brennan Presley to tie the game on the on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Keelan Marion slipped open past his defender and quarterback Jake Retzlaff delivered a perfect throw, allowing Marion to turn upfield and get into the end zone for a 34-yard touchdown and a 28-21 lead.
The pass was BYU’s first of the second half, after leaning fully on the run for its first touchdown of the half.
BYU has 346 yards with 139 through the air.

OSU’s first pass of the drive was a pass by Alan Bowman that was high and slightly behind receiver Brennan Presley.
He couldn’t pull in, tipping it into the air and it was intercepted by BYU safety Tommy Prassas at the Cowboy 44-yard line.
Since replacing injured Garret Rangel, Bowman is 0 for 4 passing with one interception.

BYU immediately made OSU pay for its missed field goal with a tying touchdown drive, but OSU’s missed tackles proved most damaging.
BYU leaned heavily on the run, finding plenty of room. And when there wasn’t room, Cougar runners broke tackles. LJ Martin broke two tackles on the touchdown run, and 8-yard score to tie the game at 21 with 5:51 left in the third quarter.
BYU went 69 yards in seven plays, all run calls.

A good drive stalled at the 31-yard line, but Logan Ward could not convert a 48-yard field goal, missing wide right.
With that, OSU maintains a 21-14 lead at 9:52 left in the third quarter.
The Cowboys started strong, including a couple runs by quarterback Alan Bowman. But the drive barely avoided disaster. Bowman was chased backwards out of the pocket and threw a pass that barely reached the line of scrimmage to avoid an intentional grounding call.
Ollie Gordon II left the field favoring his right hand after a carry on the drive as well, though he was not taken to the locker room for further evaluation.

BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff was intercepted for the third time of the half, this one coming on what looked to be a Hail Mary attempt.
Rawls looked to have some running room but Retzlaff clipped his leg to tackle him.
Obi Ezeigbo had a sack on the previous play as OSU quickly shut down a drive that had started well for BYU.

Ollie Gordon II scored his third touchdown of the game on a 2-yard run for a 21-14 OSU lead with 32 seconds left in the first half.
But the more serious story might’ve happened before the touchdown. OSU quarterback Garret Rangel had a 54-yard rush that set up the TD, but he landed hard on his shoulder when he was tackled, and was taken to the locker room after the play.
Former starter Alan Bowman entered, throwing an incompletion before giving the ball to Gordon three straight times to finish off the touchdown drive.

OSU’s Korie Black came up with his third interception of the year, ending a strong BYU drive inside the red zone.
Retzlaff was rolling to his right and threw into traffic, where Black stepped in front of the throw, picking it off inside the 10. Black returned the pick to the OSU 24.
The game remains tied at 14 with 3:55 left until halftime.

Ollie Gordon II got open out of the backfield, caught a pass and blazed toward the end zone — hurdling a BYU defender on his way to the end zone.
The touchdown tied the game at 14 at the 7:55 mark of the second quarter.
It was Gordon’s second touchdown of the game and the most complete drive led by quarterback Garret Rangel. He threw for 43 yards on the drive.

OSU saw its momentum quickly zapped by an overthrow from Garret Rangel.
BYU’s Tanner Wall intercepted the pass just beyond midfield and returned it 47 yards to the 1-yard line. On the next play, LJ Martin pushed his way into the end zone for a touchdown and a 14-7 lead.
Rangel had an open receiver, but overthrew Ayo Shotomide-King, directly into Wall’s hands.

Former walk-on Parker Robertson already set a career high for tackles in a game, then ended BYU’s third possession with an interception.
Robertson made his first career start in place of injured Trey Rucker and has six tackles so far. He chased down a deep throw by running back Hinckley Ropati on a trick play.
It was the first interception of Robertson’s career.

OSU got into a third-and-short situation, but quarterback Garret Rangel was sacked when trying to scramble, leading to an OSU punt.
Rangel had a screen pass to Ollie Gordon II knocked down, then completed a throw to Ayo Shotomide-King on second down.
The game remains tied at 7.

After back-to-back incompletions, BYU was forced to punt, keeping the game tied at 7.
OSU’s Brennan Presley called a fair catch at the OSU 12.
BYU moved the ball well on the ground, relying mostly on LJ Martin, who had 26 yards on four carries on the drive.

Oklahoma State running back Ollie Gordon II turned in his longest run of the year — by far — with a 50-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 7 at the 9:42 mark of the first quarter.
After starting quarterback Garret Rangel threw an incompletion on the first snap of the drive, he responded with a 16-yard run on a called QB keeper. From there, it was three straight Gordon runs.
Facing a third-and-1, the Cowboys lined up with Gordon next to Rangel in the shotgun but shifted several players, with Rangel going under center. He took the snap and handed to Gordon going right. He broke a tackle, then outran the Cougar defense the rest of the way.
The TD run accounted for more yards than Gordon has had in four games this season.

Redshirt sophomore Garret Rangel will get the start as Oklahoma State’s quarterback on Friday night at BYU.
Seventh-year senior Alan Bowman had started all six games prior to Friday, but was benched in two of the previous three games. OSU coach Mike Gundy avoided announcing a starter when he spoke to the media earlier in the week.
This will be the fifth start of Rangel’s career, though three of them came after Spencer Sanders was injured in 2022 when Rangel was a true freshman.
He also started the season opener in 2023 when OSU was experimenting with its three-quarterback rotation.

Starting with a 50-yard pass from Jake Retzlaff to Darius Lassiter, and ending with a short touchdown run by Retzlaff, BYU took a 7-0 lead on the opening drive of the game.
BYU went 75 yards on six plays, with Retzlaff throwing for 56 and rushing for 19.

OSU will be without its leading tackler, safety Trey Rucker, who did not travel with the team to Provo, Utah, for Friday night’s game against BYU, per report.
Rucker is said to be dealing with a leg injury suffered against West Virginia, according to Robert Allen of PokesReport.com.
In addition to Rucker, the Cowboy defense will be without starting middle safety Dylan Smith and backup defensive end Jaleel Johnson, according to Dave Hunziker on the Cowboy Radio Network. Hunziker said Parker Robertson and Lyrik Rawls are expected to start in the secondary.
The Cowboys could have a couple of veterans back in the mix with the return of right tackle Jake Springfield and linebacker Justin Wright, though the involvement of either is unknown.
Backup quarterback Zane Flores also did not travel to Provo, following midweek surgery on his lower leg that will keep him out for the season.
