This will be the fifth start of Rangel’s career, though three of them came after Spencer Sanders was injured in 2022 when Rangel was a true freshman.
He also started the season opener in 2023 when OSU was experimenting with its three-quarterback rotation.
Starting with a 50-yard pass from Jake Retzlaff to Darius Lassiter, and ending with a short touchdown run by Retzlaff, BYU took a 7-0 lead on the opening drive of the game.
BYU went 75 yards on six plays, with Retzlaff throwing for 56 and rushing for 19.

OSU will be without its leading tackler, safety Trey Rucker, who did not travel with the team to Provo, Utah, for Friday night’s game against BYU, per report.
Rucker is said to be dealing with a leg injury suffered against West Virginia, according to Robert Allen of PokesReport.com .
In addition to Rucker, the Cowboy defense will be without starting middle safety Dylan Smith and backup defensive end Jaleel Johnson, according to Dave Hunziker on the Cowboy Radio Network. Hunziker said Parker Robertson and Lyrik Rawls are expected to start in the secondary.
The Cowboys could have a couple of veterans back in the mix with the return of right tackle Jake Springfield and linebacker Justin Wright, though the involvement of either is unknown.
Backup quarterback Zane Flores also did not travel to Provo , following midweek surgery on his lower leg that will keep him out for the season.
