While making inquiries at a factory in Indapur taluka of Pune, where the ice cream was manufactured, police learned that one of the individuals there had suffered an injury.Police have sent him for relevant medical tests and his reports will be sent to the state Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) where the finger had been sent last week for analysis.
On June 12, Dr Brendan Ferrao had ordered three Yummo ice creams through a delivery app; one of them contained a portion of a human finger. On June 13, an FIR was registered by Malad police under sections 272 (adulteration of food intended for sale), 273 (sale of noxious food) and 336 (endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code against people responsible from Yummo ice creams.
Police said the concerned batch of ice cream was manufactured a month ago at Fortune Dairy in Indapur. From there, the ice cream made its way to a godown in Hadapsar, then to a godown in Sakinaka, then to Bhiwandi and finally to a godown in Malad before being delivered to Ferrao. Teams of policemen were sent to each of these five locations to inquire.
A police team learned that while nobody from the Indapur factory officially reported any accident, an individual had suffered an injury and got treatment from a private doctor. A senior police officer said it’s too early to comment if the portion of finger found in the ice cream belongs to this individual. Statements of factory employees have been recorded.
Yummo had earlier released a statement which said they have stopped manufacturing at the third-party manufacturing facility and have isolated the said product at the facility.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) conducted an inspection at the premises of Fortune Dairy at Indapur and stopped the facility’s operation.
