NEW YORK — The New York Mets‘ first attempt to protect home field at Citi Field in the National League Championship Series went with a whimper.

In Game 3, the Dodgers made it a one-sided affair, with three home runs, including a mammoth blast from Shohei Ohtani, as the Mets were shut out for the second time in the series.

But the Mets have had their backs up against the wall more than once in the 2024 season, and they’ll be looking to show their resolve in Game 4 at 8:08 p.m. on Thursday.

“Stay the course. Continue to compete,” Francisco Lindor said following the loss. “Come back tomorrow and give everything you have. They’re a really good team. They have a really good pitching staff and good hitters. You have to give them everything you have, otherwise you’re not going to win.”

The Mets could be encouraged by the presence of Jose Quintana on the mound for Game 4. This postseason, Quintana tossed six scoreless innings in the team’s Game 3 win in the Wild Card round against the Brewers. Then, in Game 4 of the NLDS against the Phillies, Quintana allowed one run (no earned) in five innings before Lindor sent the Mets on with a six-inning grand slam.

The Mets need Quintana to attempt to replicate that feat with the Dodgers looking to grab a stranglehold on the series. They lead the best-of-seven NLCS, 2-1, with two more games at Citi Field before a tentative trip back to Los Angeles.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto was tagged for five earned runs in three innings in his postseason debut against the Padres in the NLDS, but he bounced back to toss five scoreless in the Dodgers’ series-clinching Game 5 win. In Yamamoto’s lone start against the Mets, he struck out nine in six innings but also gave up four runs (three earned) in a no-decision.
