On Sept. 5, Atlanta police said they assisted in response to a medical call around 11:22 a.m. to a Hampton Forest Drive residence where they found Quan — real name Dequantes Devontay Lamar — unresponsive. He was taken by ambulance to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An official cause of death has not been determined; the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office is leading the investigation. The incident report states the responding officer did not see any signs of foul play.
Rich Homie Quan was born in Atlanta on Oct. 4, 1989. He was scheduled to perform at Atlanta’s State Farm Arena on Sept. 19, 2024.
Beginning his career in 2011, Lamar first saw mainstream success with his 2013 single “Type of Way,” which peaked at number 50 on the Billboard Hot 100. His 2015 single “Flex” saw further success at number 26 on the chart.
In September 2014, Quan’s father, Corey Lamar, was injured when his barbershop was targeted in a shooting. Fulton County prosecutors have been trying to link the incident to an alleged criminal gang led by Young Thug, who is now on trial in Atlanta on multiple criminal and gang-related charges.
Several weeks ago, Kenneth Copeland (aka Lil’ Woody) admitted he and a friend opened fire into the barbershop.
When asked about his motive by Fulton County Deputy District Attorney Symone Hilton, Copeland said the shooting was “to send a message” that “we ain’t the ones to play with.”
Copeland had been a cornerstone in prosecutors’ case against Jeffery Williams, Young Thug’s real name. However, Copeland has repeatedly testified he lied to police in 2015 as they built their case around the alleged Young Slime Life or Young Stoner Life gang.
