Jets Not Expected to Play vs. Panthers in Preseason

2024-08-18 13:00:01

The Jets are listing 31 players as not expected to dress for their second preseason game, at the Carolina Panthers (kickoff 7 p.m. ET). Additionally, QB Tyrod Taylor will dress but only as the emergency quarterback and is not expected to play.

That Jets’ non-dressing total is three more than last week’s 28 players on their training camp roster not suiting up for their preseason opener against Washington. And whereas only two players listed among the 24 first-teamers on the Jets’ unofficial depth chart — C Joe Tippmann and DL Micheal Clemons — saw action against the Commanders, in this game Tippmann will also observe from the sideline and only Clemons is expected to dress.

At QB, head coach Robert Saleh and his staff have added Taylor to Aaron Rodgers as experienced signal-callers who are preparing to watch from the B of A sidelines. The Jets’ QBs are set to be rookie Andrew Peasley and first-year man Adrian Martinez, who combined behind Taylor against the Commanders for four scoring drives in eight series and 14-of-21, 177-yard passing in leading the 20-17 comeback win.

On offense, WR minus non-playing Garrett Wilson will be led again by young vet Jason Brownlee and third-round rookie Malachi Corley, and RB with Breece Hall not dressing again will be powered by rookies Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis and second-year back Izzy Abanikanda. First-round T Olu Fashanu, who started and logged 25 offensive snaps vs. Washington, will be one to watch again as an anchor on the offensive line.

The defense may be powered by Clemons and second-year edge Will McDonald on the outside, while inside, vet Leki Fotu, who started last week, will join Javon Kinlaw on the sideline. Corners Jarrick Bernard-Converse and fifth-round rookie Qwan’tez Stiggers will head up the back end.

First-year Panthers coach Dave Canales, who sat 33 of his players in last week’s preseason-opening loss at New England, was non-committal all week about his lineup decisions against the Jets but could follow suit and again rest most of his starters, including QB Bryce Young, the first overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft.

The Jets and Carolina, who conducted a feisty joint practice in Charlotte, NC, on Thursday, have played three previous summer games, with the road team winning each one — the Panthers by 17-12 at MetLife Stadium in 2017, and the Jets by 9-3 in 2010 and 27-0 last Aug. 12.
