2) Bennett watch: Quarterback Stetson Bennett got the start once again and was a player to watch, primarily because head coach Sean McVay said this week “we still have to be able to see some more body of work” when asked if he feels Bennett can be the backup QB going into the season.
Just as he did last week, he rebounded from a turnover to help pull the Rams ahead.
Bennett led the Rams on a trio of scoring drives – the first ended with field goals, the third the go-ahead, 47-yard passing touchdown to wide receiver JJ Laap with 9:48 remaining – and finished 17 for 31 for 213 yards with one touchdown against one interception overall. The pick came on a pass intended for Xavier Smith on 4th and goal from the Chargers 1.
3) Smith shows up again: The wide receiver’s 22-yard catch down the left side line that helped the Rams almost get points on that same drive off the Watkins-forced turnover, and later he had a 16-yard punt return to put the Rams at the Chargers 39.
His pass interference drawn against the the Chargers defense on 3rd and 4 from the Rams’ 36 gave them a first down to keep alive the drive that resulted in that touchdown pass from Bennett to Laap.
