ICICI Bank has issued an advisory for its customers. The Bank has warned the users about the refined methods used by fraudsters to launch sophisticated online attacks.
How fraudsters try to trick users
In an email sent to customers, ICICI Bank said that fraudsters try to steal your account and card details by sending e-mails/ messages which falsely appear to originate from trusted sources like banks, tax authorities etc.
“They try to steal your account and card related information such as User ID, Password, URN, Card Number, Grid Values of the Card, CVV, Expiry date and OTP by sending e-mails/ messages which falsely appear to originate from trusted sources like banks, tax authorities etc. These e-mails create a sense of urgency for updating account and/ or card related information,” said the bank in an email.
The Bank also revealed that the fraudsters use replica pages of known financial institutions or popular shopping websites to get customer details like account number, login ID, password and more.
“Fraudsters use replica pages of known financial institutions or popular shopping websites and use a combination of e-mail phishing (page to capture account/ card credentials), vishing (voice phishing) and smishing (SMS phishing) to get customer details like account number, login ID, login and transaction password, mobile number, address, Debit Card grid values, Credit Card number, CVV, PAN details, date of birth, mother’s maiden name, passport number etc,” added the bank.
Signs of a fraud attempt
ICICI Bank has also mentioned some important points which will help the users to identify a potential scam.
– Unsolicited e-mails, calls or SMSes from strangers of websites asking for confidential banking details are examples of fraud attempts
– Fraudsters may use the Bank’s e-mail address, domain name, logo etc. to give an authentic look to a fake e-mail or message
– Such fake e-mails will always address you by a generic salutation or address you as ‘Dear Customer’ of ‘Dear Net Banking Customer’ or ‘Dear Bank Customer’
– The links embedded in fake e-mails may sometimes look authentic but when you move the cursor/ pointer over the link, there may be an underlying link/URL which will lead to a fake website.
– Such e-mauls/SMSes create urgency for quick action and response.
The bank has also asked the users to immediately report such frauds to National Cyber Crime at cybercrime.gov.in or call the helpline on 1930 and call ICICI Bank helpline on 18002662.
