Chiefs to bring former running back Kareem Hunt in for visit

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to bring a familiar face in for a visit this week after starting running back Isiah Pacheco suffered an injury Sunday that will result in time on injured reserve.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, former Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt will be in Kansas City for a visit. The visit will come two days after starting running back Isiah Pacheco exited Sunday afternoon’s 26-25 win over the Cincinnati Bengals with an injury to his fibula. Pacheco is expected to miss at least 6-8 weeks and will be placed on IR.

Hunt was drafted by Kansas City in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He led the NFL in rushing as a rookie with 1,327 yards and was released by Kansas City a year later after video surfaced of him pushing a woman to the ground and kicking her.

In an interview with ESPN in December 2018, Hunt said he lied to the organization about what happened.

“The video shows I was in the wrong,” Hunt said. “The Chiefs are right. I didn’t tell them everything and I don’t blame them for anything.”

Before he was released in 2018, Hunt helped the league-leading Chiefs offense with 824 rushing yards, 378 receiving yards and 14 total touchdowns in 11 games of action.

After his release from Kansas City, Hunt spent the past five seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Last season, he rushed for 411 yards and scored nine touchdowns in 15 games with Cleveland.

With Pacheco on injured reserve and fifth-year running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire on the non-football illness list, Kansas City’s running back room currently has just Carson Steele and Samaje Perine on the active roster. Rookie Emani Bailey and third-year pro Keaontay Ingram are on Kansas City’s practice squad.

On Monday, head coach Andy Reid said Kansas City was planning to go with the guys in the building at the moment, but that general manager Brett Veach would look at other options.

“Veach is kind of going through his list and looking at people, and we’ll just see where that goes,” Reid said. “But we’re blessed to have some good people here.”
