Imagine you’re a journalist, just trying to do your job, when suddenly you’re blindsided by an A-list celebrity’s sarcasm. Now imagine that celebrity is the Blake Lively, you were basically traumatized when you interviewed her eight years ago — and the internet just discovered it.
By now you’ve probably seen the interview, but for those who haven’t: Back in 2016, Kjersti Flaa was interviewing Blake and Parker Posey about their movie Café Society. During the interview, she casually mentioned and congratulated Blake’s “little bump,” thinking she was complimenting the glowing actress. Mind you, she wasn’t guessing that Blake was pregnant — Blake had just announced her pregnancy shortly before the interview. But Blake, who again, was visibly pregnant at the time, wasn’t having it. Instead of a polite “thank you,” Blake shot back with a, “Congratulations on your little bump,” flipping the comment on its head and making the moment awkward AF.
On its own, it was an awful comment to make to a woman who’s clearly not pregnant. But what Blake didn’t know — and what makes this whole situation like a million times worse — is that Kjersti wasn’t just some clueless reporter trying to make small talk… she was struggling with infertility, according to Page Six. Yep, she was unable to have children herself. So Blake’s sarcastic jab (which even without the context isn’t great) landed like a ton of bricks, leaving Kjersti feeling “almost paralyzed” in the moment and absolutely devastated afterward.
Kjersti recently opened up about how that experience made her feel like a complete failure. Imagine being in her shoes: you’re there to do your job, and instead of a productive interview, you’re met with icy attitudes and cutting remarks. She said the interview almost made her want to leave journalism and I totally get it.
But the nightmare didn’t stop at Blake’s snark. According to Kjersti, the entire interview was a train wreck. Blake and Parker Posey acted like she was invisible, barely acknowledging her presence and making her feel like she was intruding on their personal chat. It’s classic mean girl behavior… and not the cool kind!
Kjersti left the interview questioning everything she said, replaying the moment over and over, trying to figure out where she went wrong. But of course, it wasn’t on her — she was just caught in the crossfire of a celebrity’s bad day (or bad attitude) and maybe a little too much Hollywood ego.
Fast forward to now, and the clip of this awkward encounter has resurfaced, with the internet doing what it does best — judging everyone involved. Blake, usually adored for her wit and charm, found herself on the receiving end of some serious backlash. Fans labeled her “condescending” and “rude,” with many questioning why she felt the need to react so harshly to what seemed like a harmless comment.
Adding fuel to the fire, a source chimed in saying that Blake was “of course… annoyed” by the “little bump” comment. But I’m so confused as to why! She herself announced that she was pregnant! Was she this pissed anytime anyone congratulated her?
It also doesn’t help that Blake was already under fire for some of her insensitive moments in interviews about her new movie It Ends With Us. Instead of speaking on the film’s themes of domestic violence, she’s been talking about florals and girlhood. Basically, it’s a bad week to be Blake Lively.
For future reference, it’s simple: commenting on someone’s body, no matter how innocent or well-intentioned it might seem (even though let’s be real, this in no way was well-intentioned), is a risky move. You never know what someone is going through or how your words might hit them. And if the internet’s reaction to Blake’s sarcasm is any indication, you’re better off sticking to safe topics like the weather or, you know, literally anything else.
As for Blake, she’s kept quiet about the whole thing, leaving the internet to speculate and critique as it always does. But if there’s one thing we’ve learned, it’s that sometimes silence speaks volumes.
So next time you’re tempted to comment on someone’s appearance, maybe take a beat and think twice. Because as this saga shows, even the smallest comment can lead to the biggest drama.
