The fall chill is in the air as the days grow shorter and old man winter is nearing, a sign that the clocks are soon to fall back.
The sun continues to set over two minutes earlier every day, until the end of daylight saving time, when it jolts an extra hour earlier. Between the summer and winter solstices, daylight shrinks by almost six hours.
When do we get an extra hour of sleep? Here’s what to know about daylight saving time in 2024.
When does daylight saving end?
Daylight saving time will end on Nov. 3 at 2 a.m., at which time it will reset to 1 a.m. That will put us back into standard time and end Daylight Saving Time (DST).
Many devices, such as smartphones and computers, will automatically change to standard time, but non-smart devices, such as microwaves and some car radios, as well as any analog clock — the ones with with hands — will likely need to be changed manually.
Will we lose an hour or gain an hour?
In the fall, clocks fall back one hour. You will gain an extra hour of potential sleep or play.
In the spring, clocks spring forward one hour. You will have lost an hour when you awake that morning.
Remember: fall back; spring forward.
When is the shortest day of the year 2024?
This summer’s solstice gave us the longest day of the year on June 20, 2024 when we had a whopping 15 hours of daylight.
