Updated NY Jets depth chart after blockbuster Davante Adams trade

2024-10-16 02:45:04

Everything was doom and gloom for the NY Jets after a Monday Night Football loss to the Buffalo Bills. Even an Aaron Rodgers Hail Mary couldn’t keep Jets fans’ spirits up.

And then, Tuesday morning happened.

The Jets pulled off a trade that everyone had seen coming, only making it official after the team dropped to 2-4. New York dealt for former Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams on Tuesday morning, giving up a conditional third-round pick in exchange for one of Rodgers’ favorite teammates.

With Adams in New York, now, there are going to be some big changes for the offense. He’s only one player, sure, but Adams’ presence is going to significantly impact the rest of the group.

Obviously, his arrival will slide everyone else down a notch on the wide receiver depth chart. Here’s how it looks following the blockbuster trade:

  1. Davante Adams
  2. Garrett Wilson
  3. Allen Lazard
  4. Mike Williams
  5. Xavier Gipson
  6. Irvin Charles
  7. Malachi Corley

Aside from strictly a depth chart point of view, how will Adams’ arrival transform the offense? The short answer: in a potentially-massive way.

First and foremost, you have to believe Adams is going to be a focal point. He is going to end up absorbing a good chunk of targets. With the focus on Adams, though, that opens things up for players like Garrett Wilson and Allen Lazard.

While Lazard has a clear chemistry with Rodgers, and there has been little worry about that connection, some have wondered when the Wilson-Rodgers connection was going to start to ramp up. If Monday night was any indication, it’s happening now. Wilson had himself a great game, but now with Adams on board? The thought of Wilson getting less attention is quite scary.

The passing attack should feature a whole lot more wide receiver action than tight ends, which fans will be thrilled to see. As for the run game, it was already looking solid against the Bills as the Jets went for 5.8 yards per carry and 121 yards on the night.

Again, with Adams garnering a lot of attention, things are going to be easier for running backs Breece Hall and Braelon Allen. This team already had a phenomenal one-two punch in the backfield, but defenses are going to have to game-plan for Adams and Wilson, now, first and foremost. We could see some explosive run plays in the near future for Hall and Allen.

If Adams is healthy and motivated (the latter won’t be a question), this offense might completely transform before our eyes. We thought their last dance was in Green Bay, but it turns out, these two get one more shot to make some noise together.

Again, this could be fun.
