Lee Greenwood took to the Republican National Convention stage on Monday night to introduce former President Donald Trump to the crowd as he sang “God Bless the USA.”
Trump made his first convention appearance since a gunman opened fire at his rally in Pennsylvania, which left Trump and two others injured and one man dead. As Greenwood took the stage, he spoke of Saturday’s attempt on Trump’s life praising God that the bullet missed Trump by just enough so he could become president.
“Prayer works. This nation based on faith. Prayer works. Because He was sure, as Donald Trump turned his head just slightly, that the bullet missed him just enough to save his life to be the next president of the United States,” Greenwood said.
Greenwood, a Nashville area country musician whose hit song “God Bless the USA” inspired a Bible with a similar namesake and also a longtime Trump supporter, continued to speak as he began singing his song. Calling on the convention to remember what they were there for, to get Trump reelected in November.
“You will not take this man down. He has the courage, the strength and he will be the next president of the United States,” Greenwood said.
Trump has tried to sell Greenwood’s Bible which includes the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights, Declaration of Independence, Pledge of Allegiance and the lyrics to the chorus to Greenwood’s “God Bless The USA.” It has been seen as a symbol of Christian nationalism by many critics.
Chants of “fight, fight, fight” came from the crowd as Greenwood finished his song and Trump stood front and center on the stage as invited speaker Mark Laws made his way to the stage.
