Some of Major League Baseball’s top power hitters link up at Globe Life Field on Monday at 8 p.m. ET when the 2024 Home Run Derby takes place. This is a primetime showdown before the All-Star Game happens on Tuesday. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. won the Home Run Derby in 2023 with the second-highest odds (+350). Eight participants are competing this year, with the winner earning $1 million.
Pete Alonso, a two-time champion, is the +300 favorite (risk $100 to win $300) this year. A pair of young and talented shortstops follow on the odds board with Gunnar Henderson at +380 and Bobby Witt Jr. at +425. Veterans Marcell Ozuna (+475) and Adolis Garcia (+575) follow, while Teoscar Hernandez (+1200), Jose Ramirez (+1600) and Alec Bohm (+200) are all longshots. Selesnick is staying away from Henderson in the Home Run Derby 2024 even though he has the second-lowest odds at +380. Henderson has the most home runs (28) of anyone in the 2024 Home Run Derby field, but his home run on Sunday was just his second of July. Henderson is batting .286, tied for the 23rd-best average in baseball, so his swing isn’t an “all-or-nothing” approach that often favors Home Run Derby winners.
Some players who have gone into previous Home Run Derby competitions have tried to put on too much of a show and it’s hindered their performance over the second half of the season.
