Who could be a player the Lions look to in Hutchinson’s absence?
Most would start to look at the names along the edge where Hutchinson plays, but another player to consider is defensive tackle Alim McNeill. The fourth-year defender had a terrific game Sunday with two sacks and seven total pressures from the interior.
Campbell said McNeill took it personally he didn’t have his best game Week 4 vs. Seattle and came out as a man on a mission against Dallas. With Hutchinson out of the picture for the foreseeable future, the Lions are going to need performances like the one they got from McNeill Sunday.
“That’s what we expect every week out of Mac,” Campbell said. “He’s one of those guys we’re going to lean on. It doesn’t have to be Superman, but we have to get that out of him every week and he has that ability.”
Could the Lions look to fill the void left by Hutchinson outside the organization?
Lions general manager Brad Holmes is always looking for ways to improve the roster both out of season and in-season, per Campbell.
“Is there somebody out there who could potentially help us? What is it going to cost? Those things will always come up,” he said. “Just because that’s there doesn’t mean we’re going to do it.”
It has to be the right fit, according to Campbell. He said they currently aren’t in a hurry to add outside the organization. He believes in the players here now who will be tasked with stepping up to fill the void, especially along the defensive line.
“It doesn’t mean we’re not looking and not evaluating,” he said. “Brad is. That’s his job and he’s good at it. And we’ll take it as it comes. But our eyes are open and we’re going to make sure we have what we need here.”
Campbell and Holmes aren’t panicked and the team isn’t panicked. It’s next man up until they deem it necessary to add from outside the organization.
“I know AG is going to put together a hell of a game plan like he does every week and he’s going to use everything that he has and the resources that we have, and we’ll be ready to go,” Campbell said. “If we get somebody, great. If we don’t, these are our guys and the coaches know that.”
