Texas A&M quarterback Conner Weigman will not start for the Aggies’ SEC opener against Florida after reportedly sustaining a shoulder injury.
Weigman appeared on coach Mike Elko’s injury report for the first time Thursday night but after going through pre-game warmups on Saturday, Elko opted to save him for a backup role.
ESPN first reported Saturday morning that Weigman was dealing with an upper-body injury and 247Sports’ Carter Karels confirmed it was an injury to Weigman’s throwing shoulder.
The Aggies will turn to backup quarterback Marcel Reed to make his first career start as a sophomore. The former four-star recruit out of Tennessee saw limited action in 2023 until A&M’s appearance in the Texas Bowl.
Then-starting quarterback Jaylen Henderson was injured on the first play against Oklahoma State, giving the true freshman his first significant game time.
Despite getting off to a slow start, Reed ended up throwing for 361 yards on 20-of-33 passing and adding a rushing touchdown. Reed play most of the second half of the Aggies’ game against McNeese State last weekend, connecting on 5 of 11 passes for 71 yards and scrambling for another 43 yards on the ground.
Even though an injury to Weigman isn’t ideal for A&M, some analysts see Reed as a great fit in offensive coordinator Collin Klein’s system and not as much of a downgrade.
The Aggies will hope Reed can help them snap a 10-game road losing streak when they face the Gators in Gainesville.
