No. 6 Missouri Football Faces Adversity in Win Over No. 24 Boston College

2024-09-15 04:00:03

COLUMBIA, Mo. — An interception in a key place ended up being the momentum shifter the Missouri Tigers needed against Boston College. Missouri used the shift to take the 27-21 win over the Eagles in week 3.

Instead of the first Boston College drive ending with a punt after a third down, a hands-to-the-face personal foul by defensive tackle Chris McClellan extended the drive and returned it to a first down. The Eagles pushed their way to the red zone and decided to go for it on a fourth-and-goal.

Boston College quarterback Thomas Castellanos connected with wide receiver Jerand Bradley in the end zone for the first points scored against the Tigers this year. For the first time of the year, the Missouri Tigers would have to play from behind.

The Tigers were only able to get a field goal back before another impressive play by Castellanos put the Tigers behind by another score. An open wide receiver in Boston College’s Reed Harris caught a 67-yard pass and brought it to the end zone with little struggle for the Eagles second touchdown.

On Boston College’s next drive, Castellanos sailed a throw into the arms of safety Tra’vez Johnson. Johnson gave the Tigers an additional 22 yards after his pick. After two rush attempts, Cook tried a new tactic and threw to Burden just in front of the end zone, who skipped in Missouri’s first touchdown.

With the chance to tie it, the Tigers decided to attempt a two-point conversion with a trick play. Missouri lined running back Nate Noel up in the back field, he caught the snap and rushed into the end zone.

Just three minutes after the Tigers tied it, the offense just barely got into field goal range. At 56 yards, this would be freshman kicker Blake Craig’s longest attempt. With 0:00 on the clock, the field goal was good to end the first half and put Missouri in front.

Cook started the second half showing off his quick feet, dodging the Boston College defense to dive into the end zone for another Missouri score. Missouri put up 24 unanswered points.

Eventually Boston College had to answer. It came with just minutes left in the game and on a pass to a wide open Eagle’s receiver who carried it into the end zone.

Missouri was taxed with six penalties, four offensive penalties and three defensive penalties. On the offensive front, this cost the Tigers 53 yards and they gave their opponents 25 on the defensive penalties.

The Tigers return to action on Sept. 21 to face off against Vanderbilt at home.
