The 2024 All-Star Week kicks off on Sunday night with the 2024 MLB draft, where the first two rounds of players will be selected.
Before the MLB’s Home Run Derby on Monday and All-Star Game between the National and American leagues on Tuesday is Sunday’s MLB draft, where the Cleveland Guardians own the No. 1 overall pick.
The Guardians used their No. 1 overall pick on Oregon State second baseman Travis Bazzana, who just finished his third season at Oregon State. There, MLB Pipeline’s No. 1 prospect boasted an impressive .407 batting average with 28 home runs and 76 RBIs.

9:32 p.m.: Picks are flying in the second round, as the picks only have a one-minute interval now.
9:10 p.m.: Rockies select Iowa right-handed pitcher Brody Brecht with the No. 38 pick. That’s an elite fastball headed to Colorado.
9:01 p.m.: The Diamondbacks and Orioles select Kentucky outfielder Ryan Waldschmidt and Virginia shortstop Griff O’Ferrall with their compensation picks awarded for Corbin Carroll and Gunnar Henderson winning rookie of the year last year.
8:45 p.m.: The defending World Series champions select Stanford catcher Malcolm Moore with the 30th overall pick, ending the first round. Onto the additional picks now, which are only airing on MLB Network.
8:35 p.m.: Astros select catcher Walker Janek out of Sam Houston State with the 28th overall pick. Janek just became the third Sam Houston State player to go in the first round.
8:15 p.m.: Atlanta Braves land left-handed pitcher Cam Caminati at 24th overall. Still just 17 years old, Caminati boasts big potential with his fastball.
8:13 p.m.: Here’s what Caglianone said of joining the Royals:
7:48 p.m.: New York Mets use their No. 29 overall pick on Oklahoma State’s Carson Benge, one of the best two-way players in the draft. Benge hit 18 home runs in 2024 while holding a 3.16 ERA in 37 innings on the mound.
7:37 p.m.: South Carolina commit PJ Morlando goes No. 16 to the Miami Marlins. He won high school home run derby and MVP award at the High School All-American Game last July.
7:35 p.m.: Here’s a clip of Cijntje pitching from both sides:
7:28 p.m.: Mariners select one of the most interesting players in the draft class in Mississippi State pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje, who pitches with both arms. It’ll be interesting to see how he’s used in the minor leagues.
7:23 p.m.: Cubs make it back-to-back picks of Florida State hitters, with Chicago taking third baseman Cam Smith. Smith can flat out slug, with some of the top exit velocities in the draft class.
7:18 p.m.: James Tibbs III, an outfielder from Florida State, goes to the San Francisco Giants at No. 13. Tibbs, a very polished hitter, has a chance to move up quickly through the Giants system.
7:11 p.m.: Red Sox might’ve just gotten a steal at No. 12, as Texas A&M outfielder Braden Montgomery falls into their lap. Montgomery suffered a season-ending ankle injury for the Aggies in the super regional against Oregon.
7:06 p.m.: Tigers select the second high school player of the draft, with shortstop Bryce Rainer from Harvard-Westlake High School in California headed to Detroit.
7:01 p.m.: Nationals select Wake Forest shortstop Seaver King at No. 10. Demon Deacons with three selections inside the top 10, wow.
6:55 p.m.: Pirates take a swing, selecting the first high school prospect of the class. Konnor Griffin boasts huge tools and could become a star one day, with 70 grade speed and arm, according to ESPN.
6:51 p.m.: First reigning national champion is off the board, as Tennessee second baseman Christian Moore is headed to the Los Angeles Angels. The Angels are known for promoting prospects fast, and that next player could be Moore.
6:44 p.m.: St. Louis Cardinals take West Virginia shortstop J.J. Wetherholt at No. 7. Some thought Wetherholt could’ve gone No. 1 overall.
6:39 p.m.: Caglianone falls to No. 6, where the Kansas City Royals swoop the Florida slugger. Caglianone is one of the best power hitters in college baseball history.
6:37 p.m.: Here’s Bazzana’s reaction to being selected No. 1:
6:34 p.m.: Arkansas left-handed pitcher Hagen Smith goes to the Chicago White Sox at No. 5 overall. The 2024 Golden Spikes finalist averaged 17.3 strikeouts per nine innings in 2024, which is a Division I record. The fastball-slider combination is as lethal as it gets in this draft class.
6:29 p.m.: Oakland selects 6-foot-5 Wake Forest first baseman Nick Kurtz, a two-time first-team All-ACC selection. Florida slugger Jac Caglianone remains on the board.
6:23 p.m.: The 2024 Golden Spikes winner is headed to Colorado, as the Rockies select Charlie Condon. Condon hit 37 home runs last season and could absolutely smash at Coors Field.
6:18 p.m.: Reds go with pitcher, taking Wake Forest’s Chase Burns. Burns has maybe the best fastball and slider in the draft class.
6:15 p.m.: ESPN broadcast says Bazzana is not only the first-ever second baseman to be selected No. 1 overall, but he’s also the first Australian to be picked first.
6:13 p.m.: Guardians select who many considered the top player in the draft class in Oregon State’s Travis Bazzana. Bazzana hit a school-record 28 home runs last season as a junior.
6:08 p.m.: The Guardians are officially on the clock, and the draft is underway.
6:06 p.m.: Could JJ Wetherholt be the first pick of tonight’s draft?
6:02 p.m.: We are mere moments away from the start of the draft.
5:55 p.m.: Some interesting insight on Cam Caminiti:
5:19 p.m.: Tony Vitello, coach of the College World Series champion Tennessee Volunteers, is gifted a fur coat in homage to the Vols’ home run celebration on the set of the MLB Network:
5:17 p.m.: MLB Pipeline’s Jim Callis and Jonathan Mayo both have West Virginia infielder JJ Wetherholt going No. 1 to the Guardians. Both of their top-four pick projections are the same, with Charlie Condon going No. 2 to Cincinnati, Chase Burns going No. 3 to Colorado and Travis Bazzana going No. 4 to Oakland.
The Mets’ Padres and Yankees’ first picks dropped 10 spots because they exceeded the second surcharge threshold of the competitive balance tax by more than $40 million.
If a player who was rated as a preseason top 100 prospect by MLB Pipeline, Baseball America, and/or ESPN (at least two of the three) and was on his team’s Opening Day roster goes on to win the Rookie of the Year Award, the club is awarded a Prospect Promotion Incentive pick after the first round.

* Compensation for Shohei Ohtani. The Dodgers forfeited their second- and fifth-round picks for signing Ohtani.
