OSHKOSH – Oncologist Anthony Phillips secured the Republican ticket for a new State Senate District 18 after upending Appleton businessman Blong Yang, according to unofficial results from Tuesday’s primary.
Phillips is set to face Appleton Ald. Kristin Alfiem, who was the lone Democratic candidate, in the Nov. 5 general election for the redrawn district that now encompasses the cities of Appleton, Menasha, Neenah and Oshkosh.
Incumbent Republican Sen. Dan Feyen was drawn out of the district and is now seeking reelection in State Senate District 20.
Current State Assembly District 53 Sen. Michael Schraa lost his reelection bid in District 55, as incumbent and Winnebago County Board Supervisor Nate Gustafson retained the Republican nomination.
Real estate agent Kyle Kehoe was unchallenged for the Democratic ticket and will face Gustafson in a reshaped district that covers Grand Chute, Fox Crossing, Winneconne and Omro.
State Assembly District 40 incumbent Kevin Peterson, redrawn into District 57, won the Republican bid over real estate professional Duane Wilson and will now face Ruth Caves, who was unchallenged for the Democratic ticket.
Former Neenah Mayor Dean Kaufert and retired environmental health and safety manager Duane Shukoski were both unchallenged in District 53 for the Republican and Democratic bids, respectively.
Kaufert is making a return to political life following a two-year hiatus after incumbent Michael Schraa was drawn out of the district by the new maps.

Wied defeated former state Sen. Roger Roth and 1st Senate District incumbent Andre Jacque to face obstetrician and gynecologist Kristin Lyerly, the lone Democratic candidate on the card.
Both the incumbent, Republican Glenn Grothman, and Democratic candidate John Zarbano were unchallenged for the 6th U.S. Congressional District.
Current Winnebago County District Attorney Eric Sparr ran as an independent and was unopposed for the position.
