(Yamal 21, Olmo 25; Kolo Muani 9)
This was a fabulous game of football that lived up to expectations, and was probably helped by France finally finding a goal from open play.
It was early and a good one too, as Kylian Mbappe’s chipped cross from the left was headed home by Randal Kolo Muani.
Back came Spain, and then some. Two exceptional goals in four minutes did the damage, firstly a curling strike from distance from teenage sensation Lamine Yamal. Then it was Dani Olmo’s turn, whose touches mesmerised the France defence before he drilled low into the net via Jules Kounde.
France had their chances in the second half — notably through Mbappe — but they lacked a clinical edge and Spain exuded control for the most part.
In fact, their most distressing moment was after the full-time whistle when a security official slid into Alvaro Morata as he chased down a pitch invader and appeared to injure the Spain striker’s knee.
All seems well now though, thankfully.
