WhatsApp announces these updates to calling feature across devices

WhatsApp is bringing three major updates to its platforms across devices. These updates are aimed at making calls “even bigger and better” and will be rolled out over the next few weeks.
“Since we brought Calling to WhatsApp back in 2015, we’ve continued to improve it with the introduction of group calls, video calls, and multi-platform support. Today we have several updates, rolling out over the next few weeks,” the company said.

Three updates coming to WhatsApp on iPhones, Android, web and PCs

Screen sharing with audio: The feature is ideal for watching videos with friends and family, and now users can share audio too when sharing screen.
More participants in a video call: WhatsApp said that users can now have up to 32 people on a video call across all their devices.
Speaker spotlight: The third update is easily figuring out who is talking. When you have a large number of participants in a video call, it can sometimes become a problem to follow who is speaking at a certain point of time. The upcoming update will automatically highlight the speaker and appear first on screen
“We’ll continue making improvements to calling on WhatsApp so you can make the best quality, private calls wherever you are in the world,” the company added.

WhatsApp getting MLow codec

In order to improve the audio and video call quality as well as call reliability, WhatsApp-parent Meta recently launched MLow codec. The codec makes calls made on mobile devices clearer by improved noise and echo cancellation.
“Audio is crisper overall, even if you have poor network connectivity or are using an older device,” the company said, adding that video calls have higher resolution for those with faster connections.
