Susanna Sullivan is still the top American woman. She is in seventh overall.

10:44 am EDT:

Zach Panning (USA) finishes ninth overall (2:09:16). He is the second American finisher in the men’s field. Reed Fischer (USA) finishes 11th (not sure where he came from, his chip may not have been working), Brian Shrader (USA) finished 12th and Shadrack Kipchirchir (USA) finished 14th.

Alex Maier (USA, 16th), Turner Wiley (USA, 17th), Charlie Sweeney (USA, 18th), and JP Flavin (USA, 19th) also finished in the top 20. They all ran 2:12:34 or faster.

10:40 am EDT: WORLD RECORD

WORLD RECORD. Ruth Chepngetich (KEN) wins the 2024 Chicago Marathon with a WORLD RECORD time of 2:09:57. She is the first woman in world history to break the 2:10:00 barrier.

10:39 am EDT:

CJ Albertson finishes in seventh with a huge personal best 2:08:17. He finishes as the Top American in the Field.

10:35 am EDT:

Huseydin Mohamed Esa (ETH) finishes second in with his 2:04:39, and Amos Kipruto (KEN) finishes in third with his 2:04:50.

10:34 am EDT:

CJ Albertson (USA) has moved past Zach Panning (USA). Albertson is up to eighth, and he is projected for a 2:08:14 finish. Panning is in tenth.

10:33 am EDT:

John Korir (KEN) wins the 2024 Chicago Marathon in 2:02:43. A personal best time, and the second fastest time in race history.

10:32 am EDT:

Susanna Sullivan (USA) has moved up to seventh through the 35km split. She is still the top American and she is on pace for a 2:21:09 finish. Emma Bates (USA) is in tenth.

10:27 am EDT:

With less than six minutes remaining in the race, John Korir (KEN) splits 1:56:27 through 40km. He is 90-seconds ahead of his chasers.

He is on pace for a 2:02:50 finish. Incredible effort from him down the stretch.

10:25 am EDT:

Additional Context: Ruth Chepngetich’s pacers are Barnabas Kiptum and Evans Nyakamba Mayaka.

She just dropped a 5:01 mile. Just as it looks like she is starting to fatigue, she puts in a fast mile.

10:21 am EDT:

Ruth Chepngetich (KEN) continues to lead the women’s race but she is slowing. She is now on 2:09:38 pace. The World Record is 2:11:53, so she is still a couple of minutes ahead of pace. She is over 35km into the race.

10:16 am EDT:

The men’s race continues to quicken. John Korir (KEN) comes through 35km in 1:42:19 which is on pace for a 2:03:21 finish. He has opened a 30-second gap.

Korir’s last mile was a 4:22.

Amos Kipruto (KEN) leads the trail pack of Vincent Ngetich (KEN), Jemal Yimer (ETH) and Huseydin Mohamed Esa (ETH).

Zach Panning (USA) and CJ Albertson (USA) have moved into 9th and 10th. Panning is about 14-seconds ahead of Albertson. They are on 2:07:14 and 2:07:31 pace.

10:11 am EDT:

The American Women are moving up!

Susanna Sullivan (USA) has moved up to eighth and Emma Bates (USA) has moved up to tenth. Lindsay Flanagan (USA) is in 11th, Gabi Rooker (USA) is 12th, Betsy Saina (USA) is in 14th and Lauren Hagans (USA) is in 15th.

Sullivan is about a minute ahead of Bates. Flanagan is another 20 seconds back and Rooker trails her by 13. Sullivan is on 2:20:40 pace.

10:10 am EDT:

The pack has re-assembled behind him, but John Korir (KEN) now has a 75 meter lead on the chasers.

10:07 am EDT:

John Korir (KEN) just put on a really strong surge. He is pressing hard and trying to open up a lead. So far it has worked. He leads by about four seconds and he has effectively decimated the pack. They are strung out behind him.

10:05 am EDT:

Ruth Chepngetich (KEN) comes through 30km in 1:31:49. She has slowed a tad and is now on 2:09:09 pace, which is still World Record pace. She is about two minutes ahead of Kebede (ETH) in second. They are the only to have come through 30km thus far.

10:00 am EDT:

The leading men hit the 30k mark in 1:28:18. They have picked up the pace and are now on 2:04:12 pace. They are packed together but John Korir (KEN) continues to lead that group. Nine men in that pack.

Zach Panning (USA) and CJ Albertson (USA) have started to pull away from their pack. They are about 50 seconds behind Kyohei Hosoya (JPN) who is in tenth, but they are gaining fast. They are on 2:06:50 pace.

The next three Americans are Shadrack Kipchirchir, Brian Shrader and Nathan Martin. They are in 16th, 17th and 18th. Shrader and Martin are about 40-seconds behind Kipchirchir. They are on 2:09:22 pace.

9:58 am EDT:

Catherine Debrunner (SUI) dominates the women’s Wheelchair race. She wins in 1:36:12. The nearest competitor is about three minutes back.

9:55 am EDT:

It appears as though Kiera D’Amato (USA) has dropped from the race. She has not posted a split since the 15km mark. She was dealing with a plantar issue in the weeks leading up to the 2024 Chicago Marathon.

9:50 am EDT:

The men’s race is starting to string out. John Korir (KEN) leads. There are now only nine men in the lead pack. Zach Panning (USA) is currently in 11th and CJ Albertson (USA) continues to run with him. They’ll contend for top ten finishing positions before all is said and done. They are on 2:06:44 pace.

9:49 am EDT:

Sutume Asefa Kebede (ETH) has lost a lot of ground on Ruth Chepngetich (KEN) in the women’s race. Chepngetich now leads by 50-seconds. She is still on 2:08:45 pace.

9:47 am EDT:

Marcel Hug (SUI) wins the men’s Wheelchair race. He crosses the line in 1:25:54. Daniel Romanchuk (USA) finishes second in 1:25:58 and Tomoki Suzuki (JPN) finishes in third, 1:26:05.

9:40 am EDT:

Additional Context: Ruth Chepngetich’s half marathon personal best is 1:04:02. She split 1:04:16 at halfway. That would rank as the fifth-fastest half marathon of all time.

1:04:16 is the fastest half marathon ever run on American Soil.

9:34 am EDT:

Ruth Chepngetich (KEN) continues to lead and press. She splits 1:04:16 through the first half marathon. She is on 2:08:31 pace, which would smash the current World Record.

Sutume Asefa Kebede (ETH) is about 14 seconds behind Chepngetich.

Susanna Sullivan (USA) is still the top American woman. She is in tenth, about six minutes behind Chepngetich.

9:30 am EDT:

That gap was short-lived. The ten-man pack continues to lead. They come through halfway mark in 1:02:19.

Zach Panning (USA) and CJ Albertson (USA) come through halfway in 1:03:20. They are in 11th and 13th respectively.

9:27 am EDT:

A small gap has started to open in the men’s race with Dawit Wolde Arega (ETH) and John Korir (KEN) leading the charge. They are on low-2:04 pace.

9:24 am EDT:

Just as they catch Ruth Chepngetich (KEN), Sutume Asefa Kebede (ETH) looks to be struggling to maintain the pace. She is at the tail of the pack.

9:21 am EDT:

Kebede (ETH) settled into a pack of men and now that pack has caught Chepngetich (KEN). They are currently on World Record pace.

9:15 am EDT:

There are still ten men in the lead pack. 44:15 through 15,000m for the leaders. Zach Panning (USA) and CJ Albertson (USA) continue to lead the chase pack about 40 seconds back.

Ruth Chepngetich (KEN) continues to press in the women’s race. She has opened a seven second lead on Sutume Asefa Kebede (ETH). They split 45:32 and 45:39 through 15K and they are nearly two minutes ahead of the next woman.

Susanna Sullivan (USA) is still the top American woman. She splits 49:53 through 15k. Betsy Saina and Emma Bates are trailing her by less than 25-seconds.

9:00 am EDT:

The lead men split 29:27 through 10,000m. There are ten men in the lead pack and they are on 2:04:20 pace. Zach Panning (USA) and CJ Albertson (USA) lead the chase pack alongside a number of Japanese runners. They split 30:01 through 10k.

Ruth Chepngetich (KEN) and Asefa Kebede Sutume (ETH) lead on the women’s side. They are separated by two seconds and split 30:14 through 10k. That was a 15:14 5K for Chepngetich.

The top American women are occupying the 10th through the 18th positions. Susanna Sullivan (USA) is in tenth, about 24 seconds ahead of Keira D’Amato, Emma Bates and Betsy Saina. Behind them, Sara Hall, Sara Vaughn, Lindsay Flanagan, Annie Frisbie and Gabi Rooker are packed up another 20-seconds back..

8:45 am EDT:

The Elite Men split 14:43 through the opening 5,000m. Dawit Wolde Arega (ETH) leads the pack but Kyohie Hosoya (JPN) and Birhanu Legese (ETH) sit on his shoulder.

Zach Panning (USA) and CJ Albertson (USA) are currently the top two Americans. They split 15-flat through the first 5,000m.

Ruth Chepngetich (KEN) is currently the top woman. She split 15-flat through the first 5,000m and she is running with Zach Panning and CJ Albertson. She is on 2:06:35 pace.

Susanna Sullivan (USA) is currently the top American woman in tenth. She split 16:27 through the first split. Keira D’Amato and Betsy Saina are 20 seconds behind her.

8:39 am EDT:

The lead fields seem to be pressing the gas early. The lead men pack move past the pacers about ten minutes into the race. Ruth Chepngetich is tucked in with some of the elite men. It is clear that she is making a World Record attempt.

8:30 am EDT:

The 2024 Chicago Marathon gets underway. Two pace setters jump to the lead.

8:29 am EDT:

Race organizers pause for a moment of silence in remembrance and honor of the late Kelvin Kiptum.
