What’s Next for Season 5, Finale Cliffhangers & More

[Editor’s note: The following story contains spoilers for the Season 4 ending of “Emily in Paris.”]

They say you can’t go home again, but you can elect to stay in Rome for a while if a New Hot Guy hires your company to do PR for his family’s reclusive fashion brand.

That’s the ending moral to Part 2 of Season 4 of Netflix‘s smash dramedy “Emily in Paris,” which premiered September 12. The final moments found Emily (Lily Cooper) saying au revoir to Paris and planning to live in Rome temporarily to be the leader on the ground for her company’s newest client — Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini), who just so happens to be Emily’s latest suitor. As her boss, Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu), noted earlier in the season, this girl simply loves to mix business with pleasure.

It seems to suggest that Emily may be in Rome for a little while in Season 5 (not yet officially renewed, but come on), and while ex Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) appears poised to track Emily down before too long, the show appears to be primed for a refresh or two when it returns for its fifth season.

With that in mind, we’ve got a few ideas about how to keep the Darren Star-created menace going, now that the internet is finally accepting that rather than a hate-watch, this show is the smooth-brained ideal.

1. Nix Camille

I’m still a little unclear why Gabriel wasn’t angrier at Camille (Camille Razat) for lying about being pregnant with his child for so long. But if he’s not bothered, who am I to care?! It seemed like the show was taking steps to get rid of Camille (and her fancy family) this season, with the dramedy concluding with Camille telling Emily that she was going to adopt a baby on her own.

That sounds like a disaster waiting to happen, but hopefully I’ll never know for sure, because all that can happen offscreen. Let this person out of your life for good, Emily. Time to unfollow.

2. Let Mindy sing more

Broadway star Ashley Park (check her out as Gretchen from the “Mean Girls” musical in 2018) usually gets one great number a season. This year, it was a charming rendition of “Oops (I Did It Again)” at a strip club.

But after one of Mindy’s original songs goes viral (sure!), it seems soon she’ll be back on “Chinese Popstar,” the site of her greatest embarrassment. Let her perform weekly on that show within a show! That is so much more interesting than whatever was going on with her controlling rich guy love triangle this season.

3. Stay in Rome

I’m going to say something controversial here: Marcello is hot. While I’m sure Emily and Gabriel will eventually wind up together because I know what kind of show I’m watching, there’s no need to make it too easy for anybody. So far, Emily has seen exactly three Roman tourist attractions (Spanish Steps, Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, DUH). Make Marcello take you to at least a few more basic sightseeing extravaganzas to document on instagram before you head back to Paris, Emily!!!

4. Let Emily’s work life fall apart

I accept that this is sort of fundamentally changing what people want from this show (pretty clothes, hot people with youth on their side kissing in front of beautiful vistas), but imagine how OUTRAGED OUT OF YOUR MIND you would be right now if you were Luc (Bruno Gouery) or Julien (Samuel Arnold), both of whom have worked at the PR company longer, speak the language, and were still passed over for the President of the Rome Office job in favor of Emily Cooper. I want a “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead”-esque episode from these two watching Emily’s romantic bumbling just offscreen, plotting and scheming away.

5. Put ’em all on one of those nine-month cruises around the world

Sylvie would jump overboard.

“Emily in Paris” is now streaming on Netflix.
