Trey Lance had a mediocre performance in his first appearance for the Dallas Cowboys.
The quarterback was traded to the Cowboys ahead of the 2023 season, but hadn’t yet seen any playing time before Sunday’s 13-12 loss against the Los Angeles Rams.
The former No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft had 188 passing yards on 25-of-41 passing, but couldn’t find the endzone. He also added 44 yards on six carries on the ground.
It wasn’t the worst start imaginable, but it’s clear he still has some things to work on before he’s elevated to QB2 status behind Dak Prescott.
After Sunday’s performance, fans had mixed reactions to Lance’s first game in a Cowboys uniform.

Trey Lance is having a solid drive here but he just missed a WIDE open Princeton Fant in the end zone. #DallasCowboys

Trey Lance has had two promising drives wiped away because of drops. Brandon Aubrey cashes in once again though to give the Cowboys a 9-6 lead with 6:08 to go.#DallasCowboys

A few quality downfield throws notwithstanding, at varying points in camp, I feel it’s “touch” that’s missing on Lance’s downfield throws. Good news is he’s not underthrowing (that leads to INTs).
Bad news is they’re sailing, not coming down into the bucket consistently.
Just…
Lance has had a tough start to his NFL career, playing just six games with the San Francisco 49ers in 2021 and just two in 2022. The trade to Dallas gave him a fresh start and the chance to learn behind Prescott.
While he likely won’t be replacing Prescott as the starter anytime soon, he’ll look to continue improving and eventually be in a place where he can be a productive quarterback in the NFL.
After Sunday’s game, it’s clear he still has plenty of potential, but it’s also clear he has a ways to go.
