Today, following President Biden’s meeting with President Zelenskyy, the Department of Defense (DoD) announced additional security assistance to meet Ukraine’s critical security and defense needs. This announcement is the Biden Administration’s sixty-first tranche of equipment to be provided from DoD inventories for Ukraine since August 2021. This Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA) package, which has an estimated value of $225 million, will provide Ukraine additional capabilities to meet its most urgent needs, including: air defense systems and interceptors; munitions for rocket systems and artillery; and anti-tank weapons.
As President Biden announced earlier this week, the United States is taking joint action with Germany, Romania, the Netherlands, and Italy to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses and provide five strategic air defense systems, including Patriot batteries and SAMP/T systems, that will help protect Ukrainian cities, civilians, and soldiers. The United States and our Allies and partners remain committed to providing Ukraine with additional air defense capabilities to defend itself against Russia’s continued aggression.
The capabilities in this announcement include:
• One Patriot battery;
• Munitions for National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS);
• Stinger anti-aircraft missiles;
• Ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS);
• 155mm and 105mm artillery rounds;
• Tube-Launched, Optically-Tracked, Wire-Guided (TOW) equipment and missiles;
• Javelin and AT-4 anti-armor systems;
• Small arms ammunition;
• Demolitions munitions; and
• Spare parts, maintenance, and other ancillary equipment.
The United States will continue to work together with some 50 Allies and partners to ensure Ukraine’s brave defenders receive the critical capabilities needed to fight Russian aggression.
